Club bans Carey for sex joke
By KELVIN HEALEY and PAUL WESTON
11sep05
WAYNE Carey has been banned from a local football club after allegedly making inappropriate comments about his affair with Kelli Stevens.
Hired as the keynote speaker for a Surfers Paradise Demons lunch, Carey infuriated organisers by arriving late then speaking about his sex scandals, club president Stephen Quinlivan has claimed.
"You could say Wayne Carey is not at the top of our list at the moment," he said.
"We paid for a professional show. People who attended that day had hoped to hear more about football."
Mr Quinlivan said the club had considered withholding Carey's share of a $5000 negotiated for the former Kangaroo star and Footscray great Doug Hawkins, but decided to pay because it did not want to damage its reputation.
But he added that Carey was unlikely to be invited back.
During Carey's speech, one fan shouted: "Stop talking about crap . . . we want to hear about football."
Another interrupted to ask: "Did you play any football or did you spend your whole time shagging?" Carey, 34, stunned the 200-strong audience by opening his speech with a crude reference to his extra-marital sexual exploits. A businessman who was in the audience said: "He broke the ice by making fun of the situation of being in the toilet with Kelli, that he would not have been in trouble unless she followed him in.
"I think he was trying to cover himself by getting it out in the open. He tried to be funny, but it just didn't work.
Carey was reportedly seen having a drink at the bar before his speech. One senior club official said: "We thought we had a bit of a coup in getting him. We snagged him to do the lunch and he was hopeless. He rolled up an hour late."
But Hawkins -- who was credited with saving the event with his speech -- said Carey's speech was meant to be light hearted.
"He was fine. I can't see what the hassle is about," Hawkins said.
Carey's latest controversy came days after the former footy champion confirmed he and wife Sally are expecting their first child.
Neither Carey nor his management returned the Sunday Herald Sun's calls yesterday.
Members of the audience paid up to $95 each for a ticket.
Hawkins said he did not understand why the club officials were upset with Carey.
"People have to remember that these lunches are about having a bit of fun," he said.
"There could have been a couple of people who see it the other way, you only need to upset a couple of people.
"If you want a bloke to talk about how great he was -- that's not Wayne Carey."
Hawkins said he and Carey "had a couple" of drinks the night before.
While Carey "probably didn't speak for as long as he could have", Hawkins said the pair fielded questions from the audience about football for an hour after making their speeches.
As part of the deal Carey and Hawkins appeared the day before the function at a successful junior coaching coaching clinic at the club's Benowa ground

Anyone stupid enough to pay $95 a ticket to listen to two imbeciles like Carey and Hawkins deserves to get ripped off.
How the hell do these idiots command such fees for talking crap. They are NOT intelligent. They are NOT witty. They have nothing of any importance to say. Their only skills in life were their ability to play football ... and now they are both washed-up has-beens from another era.
Surely they've made enough from their playing days to retire gracefully. Why don't they just go off and live their quiet lives of debauchery in private. _________________ Line and Length ... Line and Length ... Line and Length |
