'Granny Killer' hangs himself

ONE of Australia's most notorious serial murderers, 'Granny Killer' John Wayne Glover, has hanged himself in jail.

Glover was found dead in a shower block at Lithgow jail in central western New South Wales, today.

He had been put on suicide watch in May after telling prison officers: "I've had enough, I want to kill myself."

Glover was jailed in 1991 for the sadistic killings of six elderly women in Sydney in 1989 and 1990.

In 1991 he was jailed for six life terms, never to be released.

In May, the 72-year-old was assessed by a team of doctors and put in a "dry cell" under 24-hour closed circuit television surveillance.

Prison officers discovered Glover hanging from a shower rail about lunchtime.

He was pronounced dead at 1.25pm.

Police will be asked to investigate the circumstances of his death and prepare a report for the Coroner.

There appeared to be nothing suspicious about the death, a Corrective Services spokesman said.
