S Africa mourns disgraced former cricket captain, Cronje

South Africans are mourning the death of their disgraced former cricket captain, Hansie Cronje, who has died in a plane crash.

The 32-year-old was killed when the aircraft plunged into a mountain during a storm.

Rescue workers were winched by helicopter to the site of the accident in South Africa's Western Cape province.

But Cronje, the pilot and co-pilot were already dead.

South African cricket officials say they are shocked and saddened by the news.

Cronje was banned from the game for life after lying about his involvement in attempted match fixing in April 2000.

In a radio interview broadcast last Friday, Cronje said he was not proud of what he had done, but that life must go on.
