not getting carried away, but the signs sure are encouraging. we should put saturday's win into perspective. hawthorn were a top four side last year and went a whisker to making the grand final. they belted us in the pre-season. however underdone and skill error ridden, they still possessed quality in their side and still had to be beaten on the day. not only did c'wood do that, but they did it despite being hamstrung by injuries to cummings, molloy, richardson and o'bree, players underdone like fraser and lonie, and players under enormous pressure and public scrunity like nick davis, chris tarrant and paul licuria.

this shows maturity and character. it bodes well for the coming weeks as c'wood can only get better as those players come back from injury and get much needed match fitness.

we've unearthed a few gems so far: jason cloke, mark mcgough and richard cole. didak and leon davis continue to improve. scott burns' return adds toughness and grit into the side. rupert betheras has started the season very well, despite uncertainty surrounding his place in the team (his give to didak against the hawks was inspirational).

if we continue in this vein, we can realistically be 6-5 by the half-way point, or even 7-4. this will set c'wood up for a real crack in the second half.

"..we flew at them as a hawk to his prey, passed through them in the disordered state in which they were, separated them into two distinct parts and then tacked upon their largest division.." -- Captain Cuthbert Collingwood, 1797
