Happy birthday to the greatest sportsman of all time
he may no longer float like a butterfly and sting like a bee but he will always be the peoples champion.Anyone who has ever seen the fantastic documentary When we were kings will agree that the legend of Muhammed Ali was made when he defeated george foreman in Zaire in 1974 to once again become the heavyweight champion of the world after no one gave him any chance at all to win

What absolute rubbish!

Greatest what of all time? Sportsman was it?

He made his name (then changed it) by shooting his mouth off and punching other men and being punched enough times by other men to get brain damage.

The people's champion? What people?

Agreed Magfan.
Boxing is as much a sport as clubbing baby seals to death.

you blokes really dont know much about sport do you.
At least Ali backed up his words with actions by becoming the first man to become the heavyweight champion of the world on 3 times. He fought in an era where there were truly great boxers such as joe frasier, george foreman ,sonny liston and floyd patterson. He is truly an icon in world sport .Unlike thugs such as mike tyson Ali has carried himself with dignity and is still revered by people wherever he goes.He might have had a big mouth as you say but that was so great about him his quick wit and his carisma .So what if he changed his name.Didnt a certain basketballer called Lewis Alcindor change his name to Kareem-Abdul Jabbar?
Ali was more than just a boxer,he was a man who stood up for the rights of african americans and refused to be drafted into the army to fight in Vietnam because he didnt belive in murdering innocent people
and this cost him his world title which they stripped off him and banned him for 3 years. As far as im concerned Ali talked the talk but he certainly walked the walk

Happy Birthday Ali easily the greatest, its easy to knock boxing but get in the ring and do a few rounds or even just work out on a bag and you're respect will change. It easily the best form of fitness and endurance. If we settled wars through unrigged boxing matches, the world would be a much better place than bombing the hell out of each other!

Yes, but how can you guarantee it's not rigged?

I reckon Saddam Hussein coulda been a contender, too ...

... but even HE got a one-way ticket to palookaville.

I'd love to see George Bush go a few rounds with Osama bin Laden for the heavyweight championship of the world.

My money's on the guy with the towel on his head Laughing
