1. 101 years ago this song (1.1 mb) topped the American charts (yes, they did have charts then) for 10 weeks straight. I stumbled across this original recording of the hit and place it here for your listening pleasure. The second half of the song was later re-born as one of the great tunes of the 20th century and has been a hit ever since.
2. Steve Moyses created this midi and sent it to us to replace the less than satisfactory version that we've been using on this site for the last 7 years. Thanks Steve.

Hey thanks for the midi.
When time permits I shall get the 1.1.
Sound real good.
reminds me of a pommie band that is the back ground for UK's Ground Force.
Any way it is excellent.
Catch you later

Mike can you email me the details of where you found the song and if there are any other verses.
Also what format ie record, cd, dvd the original is on.
Great to hear the rousing original, certainly beats "row, row, your boat" and "Keep your sonny side up."

Does anyone remember Brian Grey aka Dolly Grey - (by the blue rinse set of the day) Dolly Grey.
I remember him around the mid 60's when as a youngster I'd be hanging over the boundary fence. At that time he was captain of the 2nds. Tough guy with lots of tatts. The old ladies thought he was great but then again, in those days when the crowd was so close to play, the players and regulars were almost family - especially at Viccy Park.
Anyhow after rambling on - it would be a great promo to resurrect Mr Grey (if he's still around) as his own treasured existence is a real link to this grand old tune.

Thanks Mike, that was fantastic to hear. The words may have been different but the tune still gave me goosebumps!
Actually, does anyone have the sheet music to our song, or know where I could get it from? It's one song I'd love to play!
GO PIES!
Marg

Here are the lyrics for anyone interested:
I have come to say goodbye, Dolly Gray,
It's no use to ask me why, Dolly Gray,
There's a murmur in the air, you can hear it everywhere,
It's the time to do and dare, Dolly Gray - so
Can't you hear the sound of feet, Dolly Gray,
Marching through the village street, Dolly Gray,
That's the tramp of soldiers' feet in their uniforms so neat,
So - goodbye until we meet, Dolly Gray. Goodbye Dolly Gray
Goodbye Dolly I must leave you, though it breaks my heart to go,
Something tells me I am needed at the front to fight the foe,
See - the soldier boys are marching and I can no longer stay,
Hark - I hear the bugle calling, goodbye Dolly Gray.

Thanks MargOZ you are a gem. I had never really known the lyrics and my skin just tingled reading them. I'd even spelt the Gray incorrectly.
