Post subject: Daicos retirement poem,worth a read. | |
|
Reading thru my Magpie year book's, i come across this poem on Daicoses retirement and would like to share it with everybody.
Today i just read something tragic
no more i'll witness Mr. Magic
Genius,wizard,champion,freak
But now they say he's past his peak
They maybe right, they could be wrong
He's been a legend for so long
But,oh so sudden and so quick
"Goodbye Pete,you've had the flick"
They'll write their tributes, sing his praise
Of magic weaved in former Days
But football chiefs have hearts of stone
The die is cast, the seed is sown
But,oh,if i could see once more
That crowd arise with a mighty roar
And be again under your spell
That Daicos magic you did so well
Brings back a lot of memories of those freaky skills this Man possessed, hope you enjoyed
Have a good one

His goalkicking skills are the best you will ever see.
I still think they got rid of him a few years too early.
Daics, you were brilliant.

I will just add a couple of quotes from the 94 year book from ex players about Daicos.
Darrel Baldock said it:"if you put the Daicos tombstone in the forward pocket somebody would have to man it up."
West coast's Guy Mckenna said:"Thank christ he's retired.I've played on him twice including the drawn semi-final and he kicked four goals on me both times.
I still have nightmares over that kick that caused the the draw in the 1990 semi.
"Everbody said the banana kick was a fluke, but i knew it wasn't.I was in line with the ball and just watched it roll and go through.
"We just shook our heads'it was unbelievable... what was so magical about him was his ballhandling."
Have a good one

Peter Daicos was the master.
Here is an ode that I wrote about 5 years ago.
Let me know what you think.
MY ODE’ TO
Peter Daicos
THE MACEDONIAN MARVEL
From his days at Preston RSL
They knew this boy could play,
There was never any doubt
That he would make it all the way.
He would get up early, play all day
And finish in the dark,
How glad we are he chose black and white
And headed for Victoria Park.
He had all the skills and attributes
To make himself a star,
His goal sense was of all the best
This put him ahead by far.
From straight in front, up close, afar
Or on the boundary from the pocket,
He could thread the needle like none before
Some say better than that man Lockett.
On his day he could kick a bag full
Through the sticks,
His opponents would just stand there
And they’d marvel at his tricks.
Some say he was a fluke
That the last one was pure arse,
He did it all too often
This man was pure class.
When he got the ball in the forward half
The crowd would start to roar,
They knew that this was going to add
Six points to his team’s score.
In 1990 he helped his team win
The greatest prize of all,
A premiership medallion he did earn
which now hangs upon his wall.
He was one of the all time greats
To that all must agree,
A forward pocket specialist
A better one you’ll never see.
To end my ode’ to the great man
Who’s retirement was a loss,
The memory that will last forever
Of the silky skilled DAICOS.
Cheers,
Craig
