What if we offered Richmond 7 for Ottens straight swap:-

This is better than anything Geelong or Swans could do.

Geelong would then have to trade on Maggies terms for 7 or forget about Ottens.

Worst case we get Ottens

Best case we get whoever it is our recruiters want.

They may want 2 picks but in the end thy have to go with the best of what is on the table or go to the PSD.

If Geelong want Ottens badly enough they would have to come to terms with us - they couldn't just wait for Richmond to fold.

I honestly don't think he'd be worth the 70th pick, let alone the 7th. It amazes me how clubs are banging down Richmond's door to try and pick him up when he's shown...

a.) Absolutely no consistent form.
b.) Screwing over the club that threw money (too much money) at him before he even did anything.
c.) A whiney bitch. He doesn't want to go to North. So what?

It sickens me that it's now players that decide where they go and how clubs operate (and it's definately not limited to the AFL). That's why regardless of how it cost us Stevens (apparently), I like Choco's 'bugger off' stance to everyone.

The thing is that we don't need a tall marking forward we have plenty of them, and Ottens hasn't shown that he is a good ruckman. We need midfielders and we might not even need them if some of our young players develop next season.

Why do you think Carlton won so many flags, North won theirs in the 70s? They paid top dollar and got the best available. Wouldn't want to go back to the days of buy-a-premiership. Choice results in corruption and the whole class struggle being evident in the AFL more than it already is.

I agree with bokka and labrooy, makkawakka, the player has to have just as much say in where he wants to go play. After all, he has absolutely no say whatsoever when it comes to the draft otherwise, as we have found out ourselves, the AFL penalises both club and player for "tampering' with the draft. The player signs a contract and yet his club can tout him around all over the place without his consent if it feels like it (in some cases, overtly supported by supporters like ourselves). If the player then has an opportunity to go somewhere he would prefer to go, clubs scream blue murder. Whilst always preferring players we've drafted to stay with us until the end of their career, the dice are loaded against them and we supporters are often complicit in supporting the clubs' behaviour towards them. We only offer loyalty to a player until we think he can't do anything more for us, then we scream to have him dumped. It should work both ways, but I can't imagine it ever will.

If true we don't need to finesse since Carlton does it for us.
Would leave Cats with the choice of giving us what we want or forgetting about ottens (or trading with carlton for their pick 9).

If we want Ottens we keep 7 and tell him to refuse to go anywhere except Geelong. If the deal can't be done he nominates for the PSD at $500k. We take him with pick 4 for a 2 year deal - $500k and $200k. That averages to a front loaded $350k p.a. If it doesn't work out in year 1 we sell him for a first round draft pick complete with a $200k contract. Clubs would jump at that. The $500k year 1 price means Richmond, Hawthorn and The Dogs would struggle with the salary cap and/or financial outlay. The worst case scenario is the Tigers waist their 1st PSD on their own player and have to find $500k. The Hawks are struggling with finances and the cap. They haven’t settled a deal to pay out Holland yet. The Dog's could be dealt with via a trade deal that would see them leave Ottens but that might not be necessary given their finances anyway.

Whether we want Ottens or not is another question but virtually for free I would say yes.

No way - I'd NEVER do that. Waste of a draft pick. Ottens is average at best.
