Should there be an After Draft Trade Period?

I think this would be a good idea.

Another, or just one, trade period could occur after the draft has taken place. This would allow teams to trade kids that had been picked up in the draft.

Any thoughts on that?

Although the idea has merits, its not worth the hassle. The actual draft is designed so Clubs can get the player they want, as long as they were available. It would denegrate the mere foundations of the draft if Hawthorn for instance were to draft Brett Deledio and then Collingwood requested a trade for him in exchange for Brodie Holland and David King for example.

If this was the case, it'd make more sense to restructure the zoning structures and then the Clubs can have first crack at the player within their zone that best fits their requirements. If you want to get a 'quality pick', trade up the draft for your pick, but don't treat the kids as mere cattle.

If you wanted to implement a system similar to the one you've mentioned, bring back the one time only mid season draft.

I raise the question because Sheedy brought it up a few years ago, and Balme said the idea had merits, during an interview on the radio.

Has merits, I just don't think its worth pursuing something like it at this point in time.

I would rather have a mid season draft period, but that kinda gets tricky with players on contracts and so forth. Do alot (or any) contracts expire halfway during the season?

But if we were to have a mid season draft period then clubs who get major injuries or have players retire through the season get another crack at recruiting some new faces.

I think ALL contracts have to expire on October 31st.

I like the idea, but they wopuldn't do it. (THe AFL, that is). Too much stress on the kids.
