My wife (an american) told me she used to cross her fingers when reciting the 'pledge'...v naughty. I suppose the NSA will know about it now, and the CIA should have us under surveillence in an hour or so!

I sat down during the National Anthem at the ANZAC Day game in 2003 ... as a protest against Australia's involvement in Iraq.
And if they start playing "Auntie Gert By The Sea" at every game, I'll be making my silent protest EVERY time I go to the football.
Because patriotism ... of the jingoistic variety, at least ... is the last refuge of the scumbag.
If they MUST play the National Anthem at the football, then why not go the whole hog and play our REAL National Anthem ...
THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER.
Because that's what we've become ... just another star on the Stars-n-Stripes.
SO ... STICK THAT UP YOUR ZONE DEEEEEE-FENCE. |

But it has such beautiful sentiments...
"...And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air, "
"...Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps' pollution! "
"...Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, "
Couldnt find the line about the right to carry an uzi while ordering a bucket of KFC but I'm sure its there somewhere... |

Um... at the same time can we please remember America is still another country AND culture.
If you wouldn't say things about other countries in the same vain then refrain from saying them about other countries as well.
Just because they are America doesn't mean it is free reign. There are still people who come from there, have loved ones there or have friends there.
I think it would be nice if some would show respect just as you would other countries.
People are entitled to think and say what they like but at the same way just because it is America doesn't make the normal 'rules' any different. Whether you like their way of life or not - it is still a culture etc like every other country.
Anyway just my 2c.

Thanks for the intelligent and the not so intelligent replies.
Thanks to CW for your view from the States and for Dr Alf, so much for your silent protest.
We respect diggers on ANZAC day. It is not for you to protest at the current government.
Alf, I suggest you make your way down to the Shrine or the Australian War Memorial to thank those people that have gone before you to give you the oppurtunity to freely voice your views without fear of punishment.

If you really want to protest Alf do it properly and dont go to the game that would really do it then a genuine aussie could have your seat.

The anthem should be saved for the special occasions. It would lose it's effect if you played it for eight footy matches every week. With the Olympics and Commonwealth Games coming up, we're going to hear it enough times as it is. |

Well, as a matter of fact, I didn't go to the 2004 ANZAC Day game because I've finally had it up to the friggen eyeballs with AFL jingoism. From now on, you suckholes can have ANZAC Day all to yourselves. I've declared ANZAC Day a public holiday for me ... and that means NO FOOTBALL.
As for "genuine Aussies" ... I'm a more genuine Aussie than the rest of you morons put together ... because I happen to find it EXTREMELY OFFENSIVE that tens of thousands of GENUINE AUSSIES got slaughtered like pigs in World War 1 for absolutely no valid reason whatsoever.
What a complete and utter waste of human life ... AUSSIE life ... not to mention all the other nations that sacrificed a whole generation for some bitch fight of the European aristocracy.
Gallipoli was a FRIGGEN DISGRACE ... And the fact that we still celebrate it with war planes and helicopters is an even bigger disgrace.
I wouldn't say that everyone who sings the National Anthem is necessarily a "scumbag". Most people stand up because they're afraid not to. And if they sing the damn thing it's because they think it's expected of them.
That would make them "suckholes" rather than "scumbags".
Anyway, Nuxta ... what are you doing hanging around?
What's the matter?
Didn't you get raptured off to heaven with the true believers?
Jesus left you behind, did he?
HAHAHAHAHA
He left you behind with your 666 tatooed on your forehead, to barrack for George "The Anti-Christ" Bush at the Armageddon Grand Final.
Just make sure you stand up for the STAR SPANGLED BANNER, you suck-hole. |

You've stolen my thunder GTMM. Just kidding, but it would take away the feeling you get when the anthem is sung for the finals and ANZAC Day. |
