in 13 rounds of season 1972 john greening was polling well in both the brownlow and copeland trophy.Just two minutes into round 14 at moorabbin john greening lay unconscious in a heap on the ground it would end his career.

jim odea would cop 10 weeks for his act of behind the play thuggery whilst john greening was lucky to live.Ron richards would claim he could of been collingwood's best ever player.

Nearly two years later greening made a short lived comeback against richmond at the MCG,John greening was a star with his first kick resulting in a goal and his magpies upsetting richmond in the tune of 69 points.

He finished the game with 24 touches and mark of the day ,there will be never a more emotional day for collingwood's people.

Jim odea was to never play a game against the magpies again it will go down as the biggest act of cowardice seen in our game.

JOHN GREENING
108 GAMES
3RD IN COPELAND MEDAL 1970 AND 1972.

My fathers uncle opperated on John in the ambulance on the way to the hospital (according to my dad), he reckons he wouldn't have made it.

It's pretty stupid to tell a guy with a black belt in karate that "(I) don't want Greening to get a touch, make sure of it". Stupid.

What might have been, Greening, Milane, Carmen getting suspended...

Imagine what the thug would've copped now, in days were you get 2 weeks for sneezing!

Greening was a fantastic player, right up here with the best ever to pull on the B&W.

John's Dad used to come into the shop my family used to own...everytime he came in Dad would tell me how good John Greening was. Pity that it happened. From what I hear, he was/would have been one of the best players to ever play the game.

John Greening was my all time favourite.
But do any of you remember when Bob Rose asked Duncan Wright to rough up geoff rosenow of geelong to put him off his game,
One of the biggest mistakes Bob ever made as poor old Duncan went right off and nearly flattened the whole geelong team and copped about 14 weeks for his trouble from memory.
The blood bath at kardinia park.

Yes magpie greg and i think our coach that day was ronny richards as neil mann was over in the west coaching the vics.

Was it billy pickens first year?...the mark wasa ripper

I think our backline would of been something like COOPER GOTT WORTHINGTON and i tell yous all something these 3 players in defence kicked ass they were awesome.

Well i was talkin to this collingwood bloke down the pub and he reckons jim odea did play against collingwood(some years after the incident) it was in the mid 70's and he started on the bench at vicky park and apparantly had to be escorted from the ground before the game was completed by the coppers this guy is pretty sure because he reckons he hung the greatest ever grot on jim odeas face.
