Dye arrested in wife-beating probe
From correspondents in Hong Kong
June 6, 2004

TOP jockey Shane Dye was arrested by Hong Kong police today on suspicion of beating up his wife eight days after the couple's wedding, in the latest twist to a controversy-tarnished career.

The Melbourne Cup-winning jockey was arrested on suspicion of assault occasioning bodily harm after police were called to the home he shares with his Australian wife Emma Sullivan just after 1pm (3pm AEST).

Dye, 38, the second most successful jockey in Australian racing history with 94 Group One winners, was later released on bail of 500 Hong Kong dollars ($93.33) and told to report to police again on June 23, a police spokeswoman said.

Sullivan, 26, who tied the knot with Dye on May 28, was treated for injuries at Hong Kong's Prince of Wales Hospital before being discharged. The nature of her injuries was not released.

Dye's arrest comes as his successful racing career in Hong Kong hangs in the balance.

Late last month, the Hong Kong Jockey Club took the unprecedented step of downgrading his licence for next season following surveys which showed widespread public dissatisfaction with his riding.

"There is criticism of him on performance issues in general and he is perceived as inconsistent," said Jockey Club executive director Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges.

The racing body's decision means Dye will only be allowed to race for three months next year in the former British colony, where he has amassed 248 winners since moving to the territory.

Previously, Dye had acquired superstar status in Australia during a glittering career which saw him notch victories in the Melbourne Cup and the prestigious Cox Plate as well as the Golden Slipper.

But while his win on Tawriffic to claim the 1989 Melbourne Cup was a high point, Dye was perhaps best known for his performance in the Caulfield Cup in 1992, which saw him beaten on heavy favourite Veandercross.

Dye's poor ride in the race was partly responsible for his love-hate relationship with Australian racing fans.

I did not hit Emma-Kate
By ROD NICHOLSON

JOCKEY Shane Dye has told friends he did not strike his wife, but "grabbed her" during a fiery argument.

His future on the lucrative Hong Kong racing scene is under a cloud as his wife of only two weeks, Emma-Kate, 26, heads home to Australia.
Last Saturday, Dye was arrested and faced a restraining order, which was later withdrawn, after a "bust-up" with the former Sale of the Century model.

The return to Australia of Mrs Dye, who sources say detests the confined lifestyle in Hong Kong, will coincide with the end of the racing season there on Sunday.

"I will be coming home because it is the end of the racing season," she said. Mrs Dye declined to say whether she would return to live in Sydney or her home town of Melbourne.

"I don't know what I'll be doing after that."

Dye, 37, who friends say is besotted with his wife, lived in Sydney and was one of Australia's most outstanding jockeys before heading to Hong Kong.

He has a reduced contract to ride in Hong Kong next season. The Hong Kong Jockey Club granted him a licence for only three months.

That was before this domestic trouble, which will not be looked upon favourably by the HKJC.

If Mrs Dye does not want to return to Hong Kong, Dye may well return to Australia permanently in an attempt to reconcile the marriage.

The couple's relationship, according to a close friend, has been rocky for some time. The friend said many were surprised by the recent marriage, but said Dye was deeply in love with his wife. Despite their problems, Dye had been happy to go ahead with his second marriage after being with Emma-Kate for six years. They have a son, Jack, 2.

Dye denies striking his new wife.

Mrs Dye has not pressed charges and has withdrawn a restraining order taken out following the alleged domestic dispute.

Dye, who is on a nominal bail of $93, must report to police again on June 23.

So far this season, Dye has won 67 races, his mounts have won $11 million in prize money and he is again second in the jockeys' premiership.

Dye believes Hong Kong is a wonderful place to work and live, but it can be challenging for wives.

One jockey admitted there were "quite a few marriage bust-ups among the international jockeys".

Dye admits he doesn't socialise much and prefers to spend most days in his apartment, studying form and relaxing.
