Joker has just got out of hospital... 4 procedures later.
Had quite a few complications, including a hernia they found during the first op and the stitches opening up from the initial op.
Spoke with his supervisor yesterday and I don't think we'll be seeing him back at work for some time, if at all. His supervisor, Tim, also had polyps removed on a recent colonoscopy, he's 42.
Just another gentle reminder folks, get those tests done, early detection is the key. And that poo test kit... it's not 100% effective...
When identified early, almost 99% of bowel cancer cases can be successfully treated.
The faecal immunochemical test involves collecting toilet water or poo samples, placing them on a card or in a container, and mailing them to a pathology laboratory for analysis. The results are then sent back to you and your GP.
A positive test result means blood in poo has been detected. If blood is detected, you should contact your GP immediately to discuss the result and obtain a referral for further investigation via colonoscopy within 30 days.
The presence of blood in poo may be due to conditions other than bowel cancer, such as medications, polyps, haemorrhoids, or inflammation of the bowel, but the underlying cause of the bleeding needs to be investigated by colonoscopy. During the procedure, any polyps can be identified and removed or a diagnosis of bowel cancer confirmed.
A negative test result means blood in poo has not been detected and it is recommended that you repeat the test every 2 years.
However, this does not mean that you do not have, or can never develop, bowel cancer, since some bowel cancers do not bleed or only bleed on and off. In between times, if you develop any symptoms of bowel cancer, see your GP immediately.

Symptoms of bowel cancer include:
change in bowel habit including diarrhoea, constipation or the feeling of incomplete emptying
a change in the appearance or consistency of bowel movements such as thin bowel stools
blood in the stools
abdominal pain, bloating or cramping
anal or rectal pain
a lump in the anus or rectum
weight loss
unexplained fatigue
tiredness and/or anaemia (pale complexion, weakness and breathlessness)
blood in the urine or passing urine frequently or during the night, change in urine colour – dark, rusty or brown
Some factors that increase your risk of bowel cancer include:
a diet low in fibre
high red meat consumption, especially processed meats
being overweight or obese
alcohol consumption
smoking tobacco
inherited genetic risk and family history
inflammatory bowel disease such as Crohn’s disease
polyps
having a previous diagnosis of bowel cancer.

In the USA they recommend colonoscopy's once you hit 40. It's 50 here.

The old boy had his second dose of chemo yesterday.
Pancreatic cancer this time (he had his prostate out 2 years ago).
He seems to be ok today but it's been a real up and down ride for him so far. Doc reckons he'll get a couple of years yet, he's 79 this year.
Next time I see the specialist (14th May) I get the old camera up the nose, down the throat job. Horrible feeling. I'll be visiting my GP prior to that to get a script of valium, couple of those beforehand and Bobs your Uncle.
