Williams to Williamstown
Reporter: Gemma Rafferty

Quote:
It’s not everyday that you meet someone who has just had their life ambition realised.

Brent Hall dreamt of playing AFL football and it looks like that dream is about to come true. At the age of 17 Brent has been drafted by Collingwood in the AFL draft on Saturday.

He comes from Williams with a population of 500 but by the end of the week will be flying to the bustling city of Melbourne.

Gemma Rafferty asked him where he was when the draft was happening.

"I watched the draft with my family on the home computer. Logged onto the internet and just listened to it over the internet. Because apparently this year it wasn't broadcast anywhere but it was still quite exciting and a bit nerve wracking listening to it on the computer", Brent says.

"To start off with just before the draft started it kept on stopping and starting which was a bit annoying but luckily it kept going throughout the whole draft and we were able to hear what happened and who was going where and all that sort of stuff.

Was Brent surprised to go at draft pick number 35?

"No I was probably a little bit disappointed like as any bloke would be about having to leave his state. It had been talked up a bit before I left that I was going to go a bit earlier and I was hoping maybe one of the WA clubs would pick me up but it wasn't to be and got drafted off to Collingwood, which was a bit disappointing at the time, but happy as I can be at the moment. It's a great club to go to.

So how does a seventeen year old prepare themselves to move across the country?

"It's going to be a huge move just going from, especially from the country, moving to Melbourne with a population of a couple of million you know. I've talked to a couple of people from the club already and they've said its just like one big family. So it should be a great experience. Go over there and you've got like Eddie McGuire as your president, Mick Malthouse as your coach and Nathan Buckely as your captain so you're going to learn a heap.

Did Brent know which clubs were interested in him before the draft?

"It had been written in the newspaper and stuff like that the clubs that were looking for talls were Sydney, Adelaide and Port Adelaide but none of those three clubs picked me up so Collingwood told me they were looking at me as a centre half back compared to the rest of the clubs who sort of looked at me as a ruckmen. Obviously they were interested but they weren't putting it out publicly like the rest of the clubs.

Brent will spend the first year of his contract playing for Williamstown in the Victorian Football League. So from Williams to Williamstown.

Yeah it sounded a bit like that. Hoperfully he will be a bit more thrilled once he gets into it. But, the thing is, who would be thrilled about moving to the other side of the country, away from your family and friends?

I think you'll find it's only natural for freshly drafted players from interstate saying they are dissapointed they have to relocate to play AFL, instead of staying in their native state. Don't hold it against him. I'm sure he'll hang around with all our other ex-WA boys and get into some mischief.

We'll just have to wait and see, won't we. He may turn out or prove a dud; maybe he will settle down here. If not, he may be of some value in a trade deal with the Egos or the Shockers.

Did read a small discussion to this effect on LSD. They may well be engaging in wishful thinking or talking out of their arse esp re the players they talked about but it may be a thought.

There's going to be some competition for the ruck at Willie next year -
Mc Kee , Richards , Crow and now Hall .
Best of luck to all our recruits

How big is he? Is he an Anthony Rocca or a Guy Richards? Hope to see him in the Wizard Cup.

198cm and 94kg - more of a Rocca I guess, usual crap on the draft lists "good below his knees" (must have nice ankles), "terrific athletic ability" (can run quicker than Harry Madden), "good courage" (isn't afraid of the dark anymore). He is one of the only kids who hasn't said "I was just happy to get drafted" so he seems to be more confident than most to say he was disappointed not getting picked earlier.

It has me absolutely buggered how someone in the draft can say " I'm disappointed to be going interstate "
According to my maths 16 clubs - 2 only in W.A. - 7 in 8 chances of going interstate .
I hope he can play footy cos he doesn't sound like a rocket scientist !
He should be honoured to be picked by our mighty club and as gratefull as hell if he ever gets a senior game - it's a chance most of us give their left arm for .

With all due respect Warbler, most of us are crap and that's why we will never play for Willy, let alone the mighty Pies. The kids obviously been a standout in WA junior footy his whole life and would expect to be drafted. The fact he is disappointed to be going interstate has nothing to do with statistics, it is merely an emotion, if had said he was "surprised" to go interstate then I agree it would be a stupid comment.

I know Brent personally, and I know that he will be, one day, one of collingwoods best assets. Being from WA myself, I know how hard it would be to have to leave family and friends like he has had to do. Things aren't always as they seem and even if it did sound like he did not care much about all this, why would he be in it and go through so much for nothing. Its a shame that no WA teams picked him up because we would really appreciate what he has to offer!
