Zimbabwe cricket crisis meeting
From correspondents in Harare
April 8, 2004

A CRISIS meeting of senior Zimbabwe Test cricketers has been called to discuss the effective sacking of their captain Heath Streak last weekend.

The Zimbabwe Cricket Union chief executive Vincent Hogg, who has tried to defuse the situation during two days of talks with Streak, will join the players together with ZCU board member Ossias Bvute.

The meeting's location in Harare is being kept secret and Hogg will only be told where it is a few minutes before it starts.

Hogg is seeing this as ominous. He said: "It is all very tense and volatile. I am very concerned about it. We are certainly in a crisis situation. I cannot stress too much the tensions here at the moment."

About 10 of the contracted players are expected to attend.

It was Streak's demand for changes to the national team selection panel that triggered the crisis. He wanted the removal of two blacks who had not played first class cricket, as well as a TV commentator of Asian origin. This has prompted allegations of racism against him.

The ZCU board accepted his resignation after receiving his letter. But Heath's father Dennis, said in a statement that his son didn't resign at all and legal advice is being sought.

The chairman of the ZCU board Peter Chingoka said: "There are two main issues before the players. The Streak situation and our integration policy."

This involves advancement for blacks as players and administrators, but Chingoka denied there was a quota system unofficially in place. He added: "I cannot discuss the board's position over Streak as of today, but I am sure that we can reach a satisfactory conclusion."

Zimbabwe are scheduled to host Sri Lanka, who arrive for a month's Test and ODI tour on April 17.
