Lehmann - big mover in the ratings

Matt Hayden lost his top spot after a below par series against the Sri Lankans (ave. 46) but Darren Lehmann moved up 15 places and Justin Langer bounced back up to 21 from 31.

Lehmann rocketed up from 89 in the bowling list to 39 !!

One scores 309 and the other, 194 n.o. and you say that without even a lol ?

Actually, Sach won't go up all that much but Sehwag will.

Sehwag scored his 194 from 201 balls. His overall strike rate was 82.4

On the same wicket, against the same bowlers, Tendulkar's 194 took 348 balls. A strike rate of 55.7

Of course, you'll think I'm being picky and ungracious but I only point out those figures because the ratings take that stuff into account.

Tendulkar still has not been dismissed for the year. I think he will slowly be wise but at the end of the day they are only ratings.

Do the ratings take into account how many lives you have in an innings ?

For instance if two players made a 100 on the same wicket with the same number of balls but one player had 5 lives while the others was a chanceless knock do the ratings classify both innings the same ??

Rahul Dravid must have made the best, most stylish 6 runs in the history of test cricket to get above Hayden in the ratings. Little wonder no-one takes much notice of them.

Well, lab, lots of people do, especially the players.

Hayden dropped. Dravid didn't move up. If he doesn't get a second innings in the current Test, he'll most likely drop back to second because he only got 6 in an enormous total.

Harmison above Warne....too funny

The ratings are ok but when you shouldnt place too greater emphasis on them.

JLC, Harmison isn't above Warne on the bowlers list. They are equal 4th. Because Harmison has played under 20 Tests, his rating is very volatile.

I suggest you go to the ratings site and read how the ratings are worked out before making comment.

Dropped catches aren't taken into account, mainly because they would require
a subjective judgment as to what is or isn't a dropped catch. This
inevitably leads to luck playing a part in a player's rating, but as they
say, that's cricket. See the rolling story entitled 'the philosophy of the
ratings' for a discussion of this and other issues.

Of course they are weighted. That's the whole idea.

Would you give (for instance) Ponting the same points for a double hundred against Bangladesh as Bashar, if he scored a double against Australia ? I doubt it.

Obviously, Dravid would pick up more points than Ponting (if their performances were equal) in the recent Oz/India series because Australia was rated #1 and India, #6 in the world.

I publish the PwC ratings because cricket followers are interested in them. They are a statistical analysis, not anyone's personal opinion.

Neither PwC nor I state this is the perfect way of rating players but it's consistent and very carefully thought out and they are always looking for ways of improving their formula.

With Matthew Hayden stumbling at Colombo, Rahul Dravid finds himself top of the PwC Ratings. But a first innings failure in a high-scoring innings in Multan means he's going to have to perform well in the second innings if his top place is to last out the week.

An unbeaten 194 for Sachin Tendulkar will put him back above 800 points, while Sehwag's triple hundred could put him in the top 20 for the first time....all depending, of course, on what happens in the rest of the match.

Inzamam is on 811 points, 1 place higher than Tendulkar, and may go up slightly with his 77. Gibbs is at 6 with 824.
