I always liked him, but this is probably for the best – the Greens had a rough period under his leadership, with a lot of (sometimes unfair, sometimes justified) criticism that he was dragging the party to the centre and abandoning its legacy. Let’s hope the next leader can capture some of the radical energy we’re seeing from left-wing movements overseas – the first step would be to reclaim the "socialist" mantle, which absolutely doesn’t need to be treated as a dirty word.
Wish Ludlam were still in parliament, as he would be by far the best option to take over. As it is, I think Bandt is really the only viable option for now (Faruqi would be an excellent candidate, but probably needs a bit more experience). Not Hanson-Young please. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

My local Member should be the new leader. He’s just announced he’s standing. |

I'm still not sure how Greens can be described as left wing, let alone socialist. Workers rights and conditions don't seem to be that important to them. _________________ kill for collingwood! |

Please explain, jezza, how they work for workers rights?

Socialism has nothing to do with workers, it's wanting to centrally plan the economy and centralize power with the Government. They hide behind terms like "The people owning the means of production" but what they mean is the Government owning and controlling the means of production.
It's never worked, never will but there's always plenty of useful idiots to push and fight for it so that a totalitarian prick can step in and take over. |

I thought Dr Di Natale was pretty good but the Greens party was too faction ridden and he inherited quite a mess. The whole NSW saga let alone the shambles that was in Victoria.
Bandt makes too many errors of judgment in my view (which of course would make eligible to be a front bencher in the current federal goverment)
Hanson Young would be great in my view. She's got more courage than the current federal front bench put together: a very low bar I know. To take on the the slime bucket and oxygen thief David (hypocrite) Lleyonholm the way she did was marvellous let alone her trip to expose the secret, hidden and sadistic treatment by Australia of asylum seekers on Nauru was magnficent. Well done her.
Bring back the former GP Bob Brown: he was a great communicator and also brave _________________ “I even went as far as becoming a Southern Baptist until I realised they didn’t keep ‘em under long enough” Kinky Friedman |

They must give Bandt the gig. I haven’t been represented by a party leader since Bob parachuted into Wills. Is that what “disenfranchisement” means? |

They’re certainly more committed to workers than Labor are, I think it’s fair to say. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

Easy to be pure and rest on slogans when one you're relatively impotent in the political scheme of things. _________________ “I even went as far as becoming a Southern Baptist until I realised they didn’t keep ‘em under long enough” Kinky Friedman |

Interesting comment given Labor's still entrenched connection with the Unions. The Green socialists don't care about workers rights, socialism in general isn't about rising up the workers but tearing down the wealthy. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

Bandt wins; Joyce loses. Nick McKim is new co-deputy of the Greens. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |
