Green title rematch in doubt
By Grantlee Kieza
March 23, 2004

DANNY GREEN's June 5 world title rematch with German Markus Beyer may have to be postponed after the big-hitting Australian suffered dehydration and heat stress in his victory over New Zealand's Sean Sullivan in Perth on Sunday afternoon.

Doctors at the Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital told the WBC interim super middleweight champion he was suffering a viral infection that had contributed to his severe distress following a one-sided pummelling of the rugged Kiwi.

"Just call me Delirious Dan," Green said after being allowed home from the hospital late on Sunday night following a bizarre finish to a fight before a sellout crowd of 5200 at the Challenge Stadium.

"The doctors put me on an IV drip and gave me a thorough check-up. I feel fine now but it was a weird experience."

Green's trainer Jeff Fenech said he wants his fighter to have a "long break" from boxing and has ruled out a trip to New York this week in which the pair were planning talks with American promoter Lou DiBella over a possible long-term deal to fight in the United States.

"I want Danny to have a long break from training to make sure his health is 100 per cent," Fenech said.

"It was very frightening to see him in such a state after the fight. I've never seen anything like it in more than 20 years in boxing.

"The dehydration hit him so hard that he even made an emotional speech apologising to his family and friends for losing when in fact he had won the fight easily.

"It wasn't until 45 minutes after the bout that Danny realised he was actually the winner."

Green was due to fight Beyer for the WBC super middleweight title in Cottbus, Germany on June 5 in a rematch after he was disqualified in their first fight for head-butting in a bout he was dominating.

cheers bryan..!!
