It was harder work than I expected finding this in the BBL thread, but...
The Ponting Criterion: Ave.+SR >160.
So FWIW Root just passes Ricky's test, but Smith fails by a long way. |

Let's play with the Ponting Criterion some more...
Jos Buttler
Ave. 26.80 SR 138.15.
Comfortable pass.
Glenn Maxwell
Ave. 35.02 SR 160.00.
A+. |

Great performance. They didn’t even need to take the Rolls Royce out of the garage. Finch, Warner and Maxwell were brilliant to watch. |

More Ponting Criterion ...
Aaron Finch
Ave. 37.71 SR 156.58.
A+.
Pretty close to Maxwell's Ponting Score. |

So, what are the limits of these criteria? Does a bowler with an average of 5 and a strike rate of 155 qualify? I would have thought the addition of two such entirely different measures is just silly. |

Ask Ricky.
But yes, if you had someone coming in at 9 who averaged 10 at a SR of 150, you'd love it. I doubt the bowlers can achieve that.
(Your question just repeats the immediate response of his co-commentators.)
I'll have to check NCN, Agar, Faulkner. |

In fairness to Ashton, we should note he's only had seven international innings so far, but he's not even close.
Ave. 13.66 SR. 103.79.
And Starc only six.
Ave. 3.00 SR. 66.66.
I think we're safe from bowlers claiming to be T20 batsmen because of the Ponting Criterion.
James Faulkner
Ave. 14.45 SR. 115.21.
(I reckon this is very good for a bowler. Faulkner in ODIs has ave. 34.40 & SR. 104.24.)
Nathan Coulter-Nile
Ave. 13.63 SR. 125.00.
(That was from 15 innings so far. Also very good for a bowler, but is NCN's bowling any good? His ODI bowling is alarming.) |
