Cummins does it. Great day of vicious fast bowling by him. |

Lyon spins Aussies to 1-0 Ashes lead.
Nathan Lyon took 6/49 to help Australia to a 251 run victory, in the first Ashes Test. Pat Cummins gave great support, with 4/32. Chris Woakes (31) top scored.
Steve Smith was named Player of the Match, for his 144 & 142.

Thought the hat-trick ball was poor really; should have been landed closer to off-stump turning away from the left hander like the previous balls. It landed too close to middle stump in my opinion.
That was simply a gimme hat-trick opportunity gone begging.
Nice of that putrid goat track of a wicket to start turning on the final day though.... _________________ M I L L A N E 4 2 forever |

Thanks Christ he doesn't umpire Collingwood games; he's arguably worse than Stevic, Chamberlain, McInerny, Nicholls, Pannell and Schmidt combined _________________ M I L L A N E 4 2 forever |

And one for the statisticians out there: when was the last time Australia won so well, after putrid starts by both their openers, in both innings?
Seriously, we got over the line thanks to Smith, Wade, Head, some great late order hitting from the bowlers, who also bowled with great discipline.
Those two oxygen thieving nitwit openers, should be exiled forever, never to be seen again. _________________ M I L L A N E 4 2 forever |

Great article by Mathew Knox: I continue to be super impressed with this guy's writing:
"...Here is a frame for the week’s extraordinary events in Birmingham. As they walked up the players’ race to their Edgbaston cricket ground changing room, dismissed Australian batsmen in the first Ashes Test match were told they were cheats and losers who had let their team down.
Grown men – and here, cricket crowds are more male-dominated than most places – jumped to their feet to mock the Australians as cry-babies and hypocrites. This very personal taunting was the up-close focus against a general background of songs and chants, some of it good-natured, some of it the kind of nastiness that is only good-natured in the self-congratulatory minds of those delivering it...."

I thought the booing was pretty tame, but maybe I've become polluted by AFL.
The Edgbaston crowd sounded to me far more irritating to fellow spectators than intimidating to players who are not all that close to the crowd (which is also small) anyway. |
