Marsh out to Starc for 23.
5/134. Bandy 79*. Could get the #3 spot for the first Test, if Khawaja's hammy doesn't mend in time. _________________ Donny.

Cam Bancroft's 17 & 93* in the Oz v. Oz A match put paid to Joe Burns' (18 & 0) bid for a Test return - at least for this Ashes tour.
No Jon Holland, meaning Marnus Labuchagne will be the second spin option - either as the #6 batsman or, if not, maybe a Test where the wicket suggests 2 spinners.
Matt Wade was preferred to Alex Carey.
Travis Head just nudged out Kurt Patterson, for a middle order spot. _________________ Donny.

It's relevant which of those who missed out have county contracts. If they're around and playing, they are still not out of the equation if injuries strike. (It needs bold selectors, though, not misguided thinking about e.g. Pete H. "deserving" to be next cab of the rank.) |

'It's a great story': Australia set to unleash Pattinson against England
https://www.theage.com.au/sport/cricket/it-s-a-great-story-australia-set-to-unleash-pattinson-against-england-20190730-p52c01.html
Cummins, Pattinson confirmed... with a third bowler TBC.
Probably a good choice, I think. Pattinson's been bowling well in England (against D-class batsmen, it must be admitted).
Meanwhile,
Root offers to solve batting crisis with move up order
https://www.theage.com.au/sport/cricket/root-offers-to-solve-batting-crisis-with-move-up-order-20190730-p52c6e.html
"Root prefers to bat at No. 4 rather than No. 3 and has resisted attempts to persuade him to move permanently up the order in the past from his favourite position. ...
Since becoming captain, he has said he likes the extra time batting at four gives him to switch off mentally from deciding tactics in the field."
That's a pity. It'd be better for Oz the lower down the order he comes in, because he's the only England batsman with any Test batting technique. (The stuff about wanting extra time again shows how much Kane W. takes upon his shoulders with zero fuss. Coming at three, he's always a good chance to have to go out to the centre second ball.) |

Mark Taylor:
England's top four the weak link Australia can seize upon in Ashes
https://www.theage.com.au/sport/cricket/england-s-top-four-the-weak-link-australia-can-seize-upon-in-ashes-20190731-p52cbx.html
"The Ashes is upon us again and Australia will fancy their chances at Edgbaston, particularly against England’s top four, which looms as the weakest link among both teams.
This series shapes up as one that may be dominated by bowlers...
But even though I wouldn’t say either side seems particularly strong batting wise, I think Australia look better player for player now that they have David Warner back at the top of the order and Steve Smith back at No.4.
...
When it comes to Burns, I can’t see how you can make consistent runs with that technique. Denly, while he’s 33, is only just starting out in his Test career.
...
We saw only in their last Test, against Ireland at Lord’s last week, how they can all follow each other in quick succession if you can get on top of them. They have been bowled out four times in a session in the last three years so if Australia can get them, say 3-50, they’re a chance of knocking them over.
Australia, of course, aren’t immune to batting collapses themselves, particularly in England in recent series but their top order doesn’t look as shaky and it appears the big area of difference between the two teams going into this series." |

Tour match: Australians v Worcestershire, August 7-9.
"The strongest push is expected to come from fast bowlers Starc and Josh Hazlewood, who in recent years shared the new ball in Test cricket but were both overlooked when selectors favoured James Pattinson and Peter Siddle for the series opener.
It is expected that neither Pattinson (who bowled 35 overs at Edgbaston) or Siddle (39) will take the field at Worcester for any reason than to run drinks, so the former pace spearheads will have a chance to present their respective cases for recall."

Okay, he's a GWS fan and attended the GWS-Pies game, so I guess that's a no:
