Talking Footy right now, "does Collingwood really have the best midfield we've ever seen?"
No one at the club, not even the rat I saw in the carpark last week, has claimed we've got the best midfield the game has ever seen. I have no idea where that came from, who was it in the media? |

Add Adams (or Sier) and the whole set up changes. We need one of those two in there. _________________ Don't count the days, make the days count. |

Taylor was a huge loss, left a hole in our midfield for sure. Just the grunt. And his disposals are getting better -- hell, even Selwood and Dangerfield had an efficiency below 60% last week, but their grunt was the difference.
Here we go, it was Matthew Lloyd who made the claim. Tim Watson's bagging us (what a surprise). |

As vaunted as our midfield is, I think they need to stamp the roles more clearly. I’m still a believer the traditional positions of Ruck-Rover, Rover and Centre are relevant today.
The problem with having a tagger such as Greenwood is they need to influence a game beyond the tag, something akin to a Ruck-Rover. Greenwood is a poor mans RR in that sense. This is where we miss Adams. To me he’s a classic RR. If Sier is indeed the RR designate, he needs to come in for him. JDG would be a luxury however we can't afford that until we find a alternative up front.
Beams is the Rover. The designate? Sidey has been used in a variety of roles but they are the ones to rotate. Sidey is more an outside player and that is where Beams can mix it up more effectively. C Brown, Daicos, Aish have shown glimpses as Rovers but are some way off. Brown I prefer from this group.
The Centre, the ball carrier up and down the park, week in week out used to be Pendles. But with Pendles in the departure lounge, Treloar needs to own that position. Stephenson is next in line from 2020 to rotate with Treloar as Pendles fades gracefully. I don’t believe Phillips has the class.
Howe could go forward to release JDG into the middle and potentially rotate with Beams. Howe is the only other option besides Elliott that has X factor in order to release JDG.

"For whatever reason, Collingwood's much-vaunted midfield has lacked balance across the first month of the season. They found that equilibrium in the final quarter of Friday night's game against the Western Bulldogs, but smoothing out the midfield/ruck connection is something that should be high on Nathan Buckley's agenda. Brodie Grundy was absolutely dominant in ruck contests opposed to young big man Tim English, with the hitout count reading 26-3 at half-time. However, the clearances fell in the Bulldogs' favour (14-11). The Magpies gained the ascendancy through that area of the ground the longer the contest went on, but – even with Dayne Beams a late withdrawal through illness – they could have done it sooner. Buckley said after the game the onus is not just on the inside midfielders, but on the outside midfielders and the Magpies count their "high backs" (defenders who play further up the ground) and "high forwards" (forwards who push up the ground) in that mix of 10-12 midfielders. If the Magpies can find that cohesion quickly, they will be a far better unit than the one we've seen in the first four weeks of the season." - Ben Guthrie (afl.com.au) |

On clearances (from another thread):

Sidebottom and Adams - each 10 (3 and 5, respectively, centre). |
Grundy and Pendlebury rank equal fifth in the comp for centre clearances. After them, we have Treloar and Adams at equal 54th and Beams at 78th. Sidebottom, who has played most of his football this year starting off the wing at centre bounces, is equal 92nd. |

Even if we were to win a flag without Sier playing any meaningful role during the season I hope the club doesn't lose sight of the long term requirements of our list.
Pendlebury will be 32 next year, Mayne 31, Greenwood 31, Beams 30 and Sidebottom 29 so Sier remains a required player moving forward.

^ Wells is not young either. Our club does have a disturbing history of buying high and selling low. |

100% imo he is an important cog for the future of our engine room, and really we should be trying to squeeze him in now. _________________ All Aboard!! Choo Choo!!! |

Yep. Keep hearing people who want Pendles to be moved out of the square, but he's been our only centre square mid to meet expectations this year (maybe Beams). Phillips and Mayne have also performed to expectation on the wing.
Treloar was good last game, finally starting to show some of his burst speed, but was pedestrian before then. Adams has been injured and then no more than solid. Sidebottom has been well down.
We don't have the best midfield of all time or even in the comp this year (hard to say who does, it's largely matchup dependent). It's deep but not diverse enough and will only dominate against the right opposition. Becoming more and more disappointed that we didn't take the opportunity to bring in a more suited type than Beams. We had two first round picks and expendable half backs to offer. Cap space may have been the main issue if we got Beams at a discount. _________________ Well done boys! |

It's a question of the present versus the future. We went for the present at the expense of the future. The success or failure of the decision will be measured in premierships.
I guess you're saying we could have traded for someone else, but it didn't sound like we were close to any other trade. It looks like Lynch was never going anywhere else than where he ended up. |

^^I wasn't overly interested in Lynch. May was the more important target for us, though I'm not even talking about him above, but about another hypothetical mid.
We needed to improve our midfield but Beams was not the ideal type. A skilled mid with pace is what we should have been after. Ideally a young player about to hit their straps (a young Daniel Wells would be perfect, though unachievable). Someone who can play at a high level now, so we're looking for an immediate premiership, but can also develop along with JDG, Stevo, Sier, Phillips and bring along our next midfield group for more sustained success - with Treloar and Adams as the elders.
I don't necessarily believe we made a mistake. If Beams wants to come it's hard to say no and he is more of a known quantity than finding a younger player. I assume we did target players through the year (Lynch and May at least) and then settled on Beams as the best option.
So i'm not upset with the outcome, just disappointed that we couldn't add the perfect type to an already quality midfield with possibly the last real trade hand we'll have for a couple of years. Anyway, the disappointment will quickly dissipate if we start seriously challenging for a flag this year. _________________ Well done boys! |

Our mids ran out of gas in the grand final. That, and injuries in our backline were basically the only reason we arent reigning premiers.
And you guys are complaining that we added a top 10 in the AFL caliber mid-fielder! Boy, you guys are pretty fussy! Beams is silk.
What a luxury to have Adam Treloar playing a high half forward role and killing it, like he did last week. As we hit our straps, we are just going to annihilate teams. what you saw against brisbane and the Tigers is going to be the norm this year. Just too good all over the ground. _________________ Ohhh, the Premiership's a cakewalk ....... |
