I like the tradition of giving no 35 to our highest rated first yr player.
After that, he is given his own number, to make his own.
As for no 42, this was a gesture made to the Millane family, in the hope that one day another Millane may wear it for Collingwood. No-one else should ever wear this number, so in the meantime, I prefer it to be 'retired'. |

It isn't a tradition though with the club existing for 118 years before the President introduced this gesture in the afterglow of a Premiership win.
The members and supporters weren't asked for feedback prior to this being considered the new norm.
Most years our number one draft selection whether that be at pick 6 or pick 30 will hardly if ever be seen at AFL level and even if they are like Stephenson they will go on to make a career and be remembered in another number.
Personally I feel it devalues the history of the #35 and the players who wore it with it consigned to the VFL most years and on the back of a new player each season.
As the years pass you can bet the #35 will become just another number and a novelty for future generations of supporters who never witnessed the deeds of a Daicos or Prestigiacomo.
No, the only worthy tradition here was the one that saw a Collingwood player given the opportunity to forge a career in the #35 like the greats of the past. _________________ He's mad. He's bad. He's MaynHARD! |

What is that feeling like? Do your friends call you it devalues the history of the #35 and the players who wore it with it consigned to the VFL most years and on the back of a new player each season. |

I agree with you, Swoop. We finally have a Rising Star winner, so perhaps the spell can be considered broken! _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

OH for Chirssakes, Stephenson, Rising star, has not put a foot wrong, leave 35 with this kid, he will carve out his own brilliance with it. Leave him be. !! _________________ Poverty exists not because we cannot feed the poor, but because we cannot satisfy the rich.

Wait up a couple of years to see how Nick Daicos performs, he'd be a chance to snaffle it? _________________ M I L L A N E 4 2 forever |

Why does everyone assume he even wants it. Why does he have to wear 35 for his entire career just because he wore it for one year. Maybe he wants to forge a reputation with a new number? Why does he have to keep it just to foster your own nostalgic whims around Peter Daicos. As it is, once we get Kelly and Daicos II, we will be using as many as 6 list spots on nostalgia. Isnt that enough to keep your childhood fantasies stoked.... _________________ Ohhh, the Premiership's a cakewalk ....... |

Well said E.
I'm sure that say Isaac Quaynor will do well in it next season too. Guys like Ellott, Grundy, Sier, DeGoey have all gone on to forge their own careers in the senior team in time.
I don't mind that it formally recognises Daicos/Presti and also readily establishes the player for fans as 'one to watch' as our first drafted player each year.
I would think Stephenson in No 1 would be a chance to forge a real presence in that jersey. _________________ One team, one dream - the Pies and this year's premiership |

I agree with Swoop. Time to offer Stevo the #35 permanently. _________________ | 1902 | 1903 | 1910 | 1917 | 1919 | 1927 | 1928 | 1929 | 1930 | 1935 | 1936 | 1953 | 1958 | 1990 | 2010 | 2023 | |

Won't happen; he might get first dibs on 1 or 11 though, but he wants 16, and that is at least two years away. _________________ M I L L A N E 4 2 forever |

in the USA, if you are a stud who joins a new team and you want your old number that is being worn by a current player, you negotiate with that player to buy the right from them so that it is done in an amicable way that makes both parties happy ... Otherwise you pick a new number and shut the F$ck up.
I am sure it would be great for the camaraderie at Collingwood for the club to pull rank on a senior player and offer his number to a 19yo kid without his permission. Yep, good idea. _________________ Ohhh, the Premiership's a cakewalk ....... |
