Buckley on-air this morning with Whateley discussing the following:
Socceroos’ failure at the World Cup, the coaching change that preceded it, and whether it’s the coach or the players that are accountable for scoring goals; Treloar’s double hammy injury, the mechanism and recovery, and for the team its “not as big a headache as you may imagine”; Options for Treloar’s replacement, “We have young players ready to come up”; Jeremy Cameron’s big hit and suspension, on-field violence in the 70s & 80s, “going back with the flight” is the last free hit in footy, self-preservation and courage; Top 4 spot is not significant at this stage of the season, more important is “which teams are in form heading through August”.

Thanks, guys.
Update: Whateley has been off-air the last few weeks (think he's in the US). I heard he'll be back commentating the footy this weekend, so I expect he'll be interviewing Buckley again from next Wednesday. |

Nathan Buckley back on-air with Gerrard Whateley this morning after a two week break.
Interview covered the following:
Recap of loss to West Coast; Rule change debate - proposed starting positions will slow down the game, is “too contrived” and a will be “a blight on the game”; Restrictions on runners; Other sports coverage at the moment (Wimbledon, World Cup, Tour de France) “so much going on”; Thursday and Friday night games are better for players who are family men; Managing the “Snakes & Ladders” of the late season; When injury bites too deep; Constant changes to Pies’ best 22 - the measure of success is “how you fill your losses” of players; Cox expected back this week but Treloar’s return this season still in “the fantasy realm”; Injuries, luck and overcoming lack of individual talent on the field by coming together as a team; Forthcoming game against North is “critical”, going to be a battle between the teams’ chemistries.

Today’s interview covered the following:
Possible rule changes - AFL process is good, Buckley would be happy for Collingwood to play a trial game for premiership points under different set of rules this season (but won’t happen); Public disclosure of recruitment talks with players at other clubs - Buckley regrets revealing his talks with Lynch on Talking Footy; How a 21 yr old Buckley switched from Brissy Bears to Pies, “I felt like a pawn” and “tainting the draft”; Should Darcy Moore now be transparent with his intentions re. Sydney?; Forthcoming game against Richmond - will look at “what worked and what didn’t in Rnd 6” but there are now personnel shifts and “we won’t be too cute”; Goldsack’s rehab progress and outlook on "a sad ending vs. a great ending"; Interview concludes with a return to the proposal of rule change trial games - merits of trials in home&away games vs pre-season games. Buckley says better to gather data now than wait for trials next year.

This morning’s interview:
Work of Challenge Cancer charity; Buckley “not too bad” after Saturday, except for Shaz’s ACL injury - “our injury status is not our narrative”, no tipping point; Reinforcements? - no different to usual weekly changes to selection; Goldsack’s “amazing” comeback, will play VFL this week and be back in AFL “when form warrants” and like others only if he makes Pies a better team; De Goey - club being cautious with his injury, will reassess after this week;
Worsfold and Essendon’s turnaround this season; Belief and momentum can help you push through in a game; Buckley eating almonds in coaches’ box; Protected area and recap of 1st and 2nd goals in Richmond game; Higgin’s goal? - “I don’t know”; Mason Cox getting unfairly defended - “there’s body contests and then there’s holds”, Umps drew the line early in the game and Richmond took it from there; Repeated no comment when asked about Pies getting Tom Lynch.
