One is a first-hand claim and one isn’t. It’s the difference between 1) claiming to have been raped and 2) claiming that the rape didn’t occur because you know the alleged perpetrator and he’s a good guy. We may not be able to accept 1) on face value without further evidence and a legal process, but surely you’d agree it’s on a totally different level to 2). _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

But we don't know the substance of the allegations. It could be:
1. I was raped, against
2. Well I was sitting on the bed at the time and that wasn't no rape.
You assume the second is not first hand, but we don't know. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

Short of such a claim (e.g. "I was there and nothing happened – she's lying"), there's little reason to assume that anything like the second occurred and every reason to assume it didn't. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

Steve Bannon's on board, anyhow.

Quote: | In an interview published Friday in Bloomberg News, Bannon describes the movement as not just against sexual misconduct but against the idea of a male-dominated patriarchal society in general.
“The top seven stories today are all guys getting blown up,” Bannon says, referring to major media figures who saw careers end, such as Charlie Rose and Matt Lauer. “And these are not small guys.”
“I think it’s going to unfold like the Tea Party, only bigger,” he continues. “It’s not Me Too. It’s not just sexual harassment. It’s an anti-patriarchy movement. Time’s up on 10,000 years of recorded history. This is coming. This is real.” |

Because he is unafraid, he occasionally says interesting things, Bannon. I don’t think it’s true, in this case, but it’s interesting to consider the idea that some soap bubbles on the surface of fashionable consciousness may have a deeper meaning. _________________ Two more flags before I die!

I actually reckon he’s spot on. This is the most sustained and aggressive period of feminist activism in the West since the 1970s, and one can’t help but think that certain things that were accepted five, ten years ago – unequal gender representation in parliaments, stereotypical treatment of women in media and advertising, laws that limit women’s freedoms – won’t be any more. If you see the present-day West as patriarchal (and I’m surprised Bannon does), then it’s fair to assume that that patriarchy is on life support now and won’t be around for much longer.
One thing that the movement benefits from at the moment is a mostly unacknowledged coalition between conservative, heteronormative social values (in which women are to be treated chivalrously by men and ‘respected’, in the old-fashioned sense) with feminist progressivism (in which the goal is generally gender equality in all facets of society). This is why The Herald Sun can run a sustained anti–violence against women campaign, and why it finds support from figures like Peter Dutton on the one hand and socialists on the other. This contradiction might be a problem if the two sides were more ideologically committed, but they’re not: the political right depends on women’s votes in order to gain election (less necessary with actual minorities), and contemporary feminism has largely abandoned many of its fundamental second-wave principles that would have placed it in conflict with conservatives – a destruction of gender roles, criticism of femininity as well as masculinity, etc. – instead gravitating towards an identity politics focus that emphasises individuality and fits neatly within a liberal capitalist worldview. Marxists and old-school feminists may see that as a sell-out, but, in some ways, it’s a textbook example of how social progress works and becomes established within the mainstream. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

It's going to be interesting.
How will the notion of chivalry co-exist with the notion of equality? (not just in rights) There's be some double standards called out and levels of confusion and periods of adjustment.
There's also the younger blue collar generation where the gender roles still seem solidly fixed. Woman cooks and does the housework. Interestingly now that my son is living alone, some of the partially remembered cooking lessons I gave him as a kid are being forcibly dragged back to front of mind as there's no one there to cook for him and he knows he can't live on take away. Also, at least part of the reason why my daughter broke up with her BF a few months back is that while he was home from work (on TAC) with some pretty bad pain in the upper back and neck, he sat on his arse all day and did nothing around the house. he wasn't crippled, he was capable of washing dishes or even hanging out a load of washing, but he just sat on his arse all day assuming my daughter would clean up after she got home from work. She only took that for so long.
I hope we end up at a point where it's just clearly acknowledged that men and women are not the same, they are different both physically and chemically which in turn creates other differences, but that when it comes to human rights everyone should be treated equally regardless of gender, race, religion etc.
An activist movement wanting something different to that is going to cause some pain. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

We were actually at that point about 20 years ago. Where we are now is in a contest for power and advantage, pursued mostly by middle class women who want to access economic and social privilege. Anyone who has worked in large organisations (which is where power resides in modern society) knows that gender discrimination for higher roles is practised strongly in women’s favor, Under the banner of “diversity” initiatives. It’s just a fact, though saying it loses one influence in that system, so men suppress it (or, at a high enough level, they no longer care, as it does not hurt their personal interests).
I suspect that psychological balance (as well as the instinct to value and raise children) is more common among women than men, and as a result many women - though by no means all - do not want the specific trade-offs that go with taking on the most senior roles in large organisations. So there is always a deficit of women competing for jobs at these levels. The implicit “it should be 50%” quota-thinking that is now dominant means that women who do want those roles, but who may not be “good” or driven enough to get them on merit, use diversity as their passport. Interestingly, as a result, the senior men I know are on average more emotionally competent than the senior women, thoug/there are of course many exceptions. _________________ Two more flags before I die! |

Deep throat being stopped at Astor theatre. Peter Rabbit being boycotted because of concerns about food allergies. How effin precious have these dickheads become. I wonder if the nazis began by burning books? Nobody is forcing anyone to watch anything nor read anything. Golliwogs removed from a Cairns toyshop.
African Queen. Mysogynist drunk. Ban. Gone with the Wind. Racist, ban. Casablanca. Gambling and anti german. Ban. On the Waterfront. Violent .Ban. Marx Bros films. Demeaning to fat chicks. Ban.
Can someone tell these numbnuts that banning it in theatre does absolutely EFF all in todays technology.

It has gone completely stupid.
Redundancies in mining companies are 95% males (don't want to upset the girls!). Women are given jobs, not because they're better qualified... just because they're women (in a lot of instances).
The feminazi movement are nutjobs! _________________ Don't count the days, make the days count. |
