Post subject: Offer Hodge an assistant coaching role | |

Regardless of who coaches next year, we should offer Hodge an assistant's role right now.
Experience of the Hawthorn system, a degree of mongrel and a clear leader. I wouldn't fancy facing him after failing to follow instructions. |

He'll be the hottest ticket in town. He only ends up at Collingwood if that's what he wants. He might be smarter to go somewhere like Sydney, get a good grounding in a stable administration/coaching setup for a number of years, then, if he's good enough maybe move back to the Hawks when Clarkson's time inevitably comes to an end. |

I agree with the idea on paper, but is coaching something he wants to do? Is he/will he actually be any good at it? He has spent a bit of time in the media so this may be his preferred career path. |

If Bucks is replaced then I'd love us to get Hodge as an assistant, give him a mentor for 2 yrs, then let him assume the coaching position. |

That's what we did with Buckley.
Collingwood is now not an environment that breeds success or develops and improves individuals.
Hodge would be smart enough not to fall for it.
Buckley was considered to be a top quality coaching prospect and being at Collingwood for 8 years in that capacity may just ruin him for life.
I find this blind faith in what is going on down there downright perplexing in the face of all evidence to the contrary.
Ed will more than likely re-sign Buckley for another 3 years because there are no other realistic options, nobody of substantial potential wants to come to Collingwood and there is no other plan.
This is how most benevolent dictatorships end up. History teaches this. _________________ Join the KOA at www.facebook.com/groups/knightsofabbotsford |

Surely captaincy is a form of coaching. |

Was thinking the exact same thing.
I hate his guts mind you, and yet I can see the benefit of him replacing one of our many inept assistant coaches that infest Lexus like rats.
The man obviously has a brilliant tactical football brain, not like these lacky yes-men the pending outgoing senior coach has surrounded himself with.
We see him marshalling the defenders positioning each week when the ball looks like entering their D50; the commentators don't call him the Quarterback for nothing.
Yet Whorethorn would be remiss not to retain him in an assistant coaching position come 2018.
You'd expect him to want to keep his young family in Melbourne though.
Despite Sam Mitchell relocating his to WA on the proviso of a similar deal.
So i'm leaning towards Tudor/Dew for the big chair, with Hodge to snipe his way into an assistant role.
Do it, you stubborn arseholes. _________________ M I L L A N E 4 2 forever |

I've been on about him for ages privately, if we were to replace Bucks. Get Hodge. The similarities to Lethal Leigh are amazing. I know Lethal came in as an assistant to Bobby Rose and took over mid-season, but hell, why wait? |

Bruce, I doubt any AFL club would appoint anybody who hasn't been sitting in the coaches box as such for at least a few seasons, regardless of their pedigree.
I see your point, but the 80s were a much different coal face to what we have now. _________________ M I L L A N E 4 2 forever |

In your heart do you really think we can win it in the next 2 years? I don't, so perfect on the job experience for Hodgey to strike 2020 onwards, multiple Premierships.
Maybe I'm dreaming. |

I like the idea, even if he is quite... good influence to have around the club.
Eddies going to have to open his cheque book next year anyway. _________________ All Aboard!! Choo Choo!!! |

I see great merit in it, hes not ex Pies player, ideal really, a lot of Clarko must have rubbed off on him, his ideas, etc. And, despite what others think, Collingwood, despite of cockups, is still the biggest Club in town, the brand is still attractive and large. _________________ Poverty exists not because we cannot feed the poor, but because we cannot satisfy the rich.
