VICTORIA were charging towards their first win by an innings in Perth since 1951 after one of WA's most humbling days of domestic cricket today.

The Bushrangers maintained their impressive interstate form after breaking a 20-year hoodoo at the 'Gabba last month by defeating Queensland by four wickets.

In reply to WA's 151, the Bushrangers were 3-550 with Jon Moss (149no) and David Hussey (121no) at the crease at stumps on the second day as the Warriors fell to pieces late in the day.

If it were a boxing contest, the towel would have already been thrown in, but the dispirited home side will have to front up again tomorrow to tackle a near impossible task to save the match.

Victoria utterly dominated the opening day by dismissing WA for 151 and cruising to first innings points by the close.

But the wheels completely fell off today with the visitors showing the benefits of their gruelling off-season training program by grinding them into the WACA dirt.

Elegant Matthew Elliott (182) outscored the Warriors' first dig with a majestic knock to set up Victoria's drive for a healthy buffer on top of the Pura Cup table heading into the New Year.

He moved beyond 8000 runs in domestic four-day cricket today as he flayed the WA attack and only gave the one chance with debutant Michael Thistle dropping a tough return catch on 43 yesterday.

The bottom-placed Warriors rued grassing another difficult chance with Marcus North failing to grasp Moss on 18 as stand-in captain Murray Goodwin's debut outing at the helm turned into a nightmare.

First-time Vics skipper Moss and Hussey hit the accelerator in the final session and destroyed any remaining morale in the WA camp with a record fourth wicket stand.

Their unbeaten partnership of 246 off 324 balls broke a 46-year-old record for a fourth wicket stand in matches between the states.

WA (two points) are now in danger of picking up the wooden spoon in the domestic four day competition for the first time since 1977-78.

After resuming at 1-168, medium-pacer Peter Worthington ended Matthew Mott (7 and Elliott's 179-run second wicket stand when he had the former caught behind for the only wicket to fall in the opening session.

Swing bowler Callum Thorp (1-80) was the other wicket-taker today trapping Elliott in front in the middle session.

However, WA unravelled in the field in the final session as Goodwin introduced his eighth bowler in Shaun Marsh, who was smashed for 19 runs in his fourth over.

Moss chalked up his third first class hundred as he and Hussey compiled their highest Pura Cup scores.

But it was the ton by Hussey, who left WA two summers ago because he was unwanted, that rubbed salt into the wound for local selectors.

Wicketkeeper Ryan Campbell dropped a tough chance off Hussey on 75.

The 26-year-old brought up his first Pura Cup hundred in Perth today and his third in five Pura Cup matches this season.

Meuleman and North then put on 69. Then North (33) and Marsh (0) were dismissed in two balls by McDonald (3/32)

SWING bowler Andrew McDonald's six-wicket haul completed Victoria's demolition of Western Australia late on day three of their Pura Cup cricket at the WACA Ground today.

The red-headed medium-pacer took 6-67 to become Victoria's leading wicket-taker in the Pura Cup competition this summer with 20 scalps after the visitors toiled in boiling conditions on a lifeless pitch.

He was their sixth bowler used today and easily their most damaging as the Bushrangers won by an innings and 158 runs.

The victory moved the Bushrangers to a six-point buffer at the top of the Pura Cup table after finishing off one of the WA's biggest defeats on home soil.

Ian Harvey removed tailender Michael Thistle (14) with the fifth-last ball of the day after umpires allowed an extra half hour of play to allow Victoria to claim the result within three days.

After showing some defiance during the day, the home team surrendered in the final session, losing eight wickets and the last five for 41.

Victoria earlier closed its mammoth first innings at 3(dec)-613, the highest Pura Cup/Sheffield Shield score against WA and the fourth-highest total at the WACA.

Fringe WA player Scott Meuleman (106) was again the surprise leader of the local resistance with his first Pura Cup hundred, after scoring 53 of his side's 151 in the first innings.

Meuleman, who had made just 121 runs in his previous 15 first-class outings before the match, brought up his ton by cutting Jon Moss for four.

But acting captain Moss had him caught on the crease late in the day as the Bushrangers stormed to a win.

After resuming at 3-550, Moss (172no) and David Hussey (160no) continued their record-breaking fourth-wicket stand with 63 runs off 10 overs before the innings was closed.

Their unbeaten partnership of 309 was the highest for the fourth wicket by a Victorian pair in a domestic first-class match.

It broke the record of 301 set by Leo O'Brien and Leonard Darling in 1932-33 in Brisbane.

The declaration meant that opener Matthew Elliott's 182 was the top score for visitors while the WA bowling figures made for some ugly reading.

Elliott was named man of the match for setting up the foundation for his side's enormous total.

But after WA had failed to remove a Victorian batsmen for 385 balls, it took the Vics just six deliveries before debutant opener Craig Simmons (one) was bowled by Ian Harvey (1-32).

However, it was hard going for the Victorians from then on with McDonald playing a crucial role.

He picked up the only wicket of the middle session in the in-form Murray Goodwin (3 before ending Marcus North's patient knock of 33.

Shaun Marsh's attempt to occupy the crease was short-lived as the Australia A one-day player continued his wretched summer with a golden duck.

The 20-year-old was selected in the Australia A side for two one-dayers next month but has made only 135 Pura Cup runs at just under 17 this season.

Campbell survived the hat-trick delivery but McDonald ensured he was the star of the day by having Brad Hogg (25) caught behind in the fourth-last over.

WA was 7-271 at the expected close of play but the umpires allowed the extra half hour and McDonald claimed another two wickets before Harvey wrapped up the match.

Hooksy has been a breath of fresh air since arriving. He has promoted the likes of McDonald, receruited Hussey and Moss and the fresh faces have added so much to the team.

As they say a change is as good as a holiday

I would love to see Hooksy coaching the Australian team or at least be a selector.
