Should the Queens Birthday match be rotated so Melbourne no longer receive the gate takings every year? |

Post subject: Start rotating the Queens Birthday gate takings again? | |
|
Hello all,
I feel this could be an issue that should be bought up at the next AGM. I would love to know how other supporters feel about Melbourne being given the gate takings every season by Collingwood for goodness knows how many years. I was trying to remember the exact year it started, but was unsure.
Anyway - just putting out the feelers to see if others feel that we should start rotating the home team again for the Queens Birthday game.
EDIT - The poll is currently 21 votes for yes and 3 for no. Unfortunately, I cannot edit a poll but per a suggestion from piedys - if you would prefer that we give up the game altogether and let say Melb and Essendon clash on Queens Birthday - please respond in the thread. Another great idea!
Thanks! _________________ HANDS OFF OUR JUMPER

I am a long time critic of this arrangement and I refuse to go on the basis that I can't stand the way Melbourne use this day.
It is always about the Melbourne football club.
Someone said in a previous thread that Ed said it allowed us to have more games at the MCG.
I don't care. I want this game rotated ful stop.
Or I am happy to lose it. _________________ we don't eat our own at collingwood we just allow them to foul our nest. |

It started in 2001. We have given them a free kick for a while.
Don't think the AFL will stop it now that MND is the focus but yes maybe the gate receipts should be split from now on. _________________ Human behavioural studies suggest people who use a lot of swear words tend to be more honest & trustworthy. |

What are origins of this game?
How did it come about that it was to be a Melbourne/Collingwood fixture?
How did it come about that Melbourne claim it as their own each year? |

Get rid of it completely.
There's simply no need for us to be playing in this game if it's a Melbourne home game every year, and that part isn't going to change.
We should request that someone else plays Melbourne next QB, and we resort to a normal Saturday or Sunday game.
Enough of this charity for clubs who acsolutely despise us. |

That was me re: AFL gives us 15 odd MCG games a year if we play in this Melb home game. Eddie said this at the end of 2013 members' forum.
I'm over it quite frankly. I'd rather my long weekend back without having to worry about my team playing on the Monday. _________________ Est. 2002 |

Yes it is annoying waiting for the monday arvo.
And as far as I remember Collingwood have been playing the Dees on this day for decades.
From wikipedia
Football has been played on the Queen's or King's Birthday holiday since the first season of the Victorian Football League in 1897.[1]
The rivalry between Collingwood and Melbourne goes back many years. In 1958 a record non-finals crowd of 99,256 saw a top of the table clash between the two teams.[2]
Since 2001, the AFL has only scheduled Melbourne against Collingwood at the MCG on the public holiday. The round in which the game is played is sometimes referred to as the "Queen's Birthday Round", although this is somewhat misleading as Queensland and Western Australia do not celebrate a public holiday on that date.
Introduced in 2015, the player adjudged best-afield is awarded the Neale Daniher Trophy.[3] _________________ we don't eat our own at collingwood we just allow them to foul our nest. |

Just looked at the history of this game since 1861.
Although Collingwood have played the Dees multiple times on this day.
It wasn't until 2001 that it has been every year. _________________ we don't eat our own at collingwood we just allow them to foul our nest. |

Agree that waiting until the Monday afternoon is annoying, particularly as it's unattractive for those of us who need to travel from the country. It was the main reason I didn't go yesterday, and is the same reason I don't attend Sunday twilight games anymore.... but I digress. What I'm saying is that I would much prefer it started at 1.10pm or thereabouts.
In terms of Ed's/the club's agreement, let's not be stubborn; if it allows the club more income through bums on seats versus playing more games at Etihad/other, then maybe we just need to suck it up. Besides, who can honestly say they would rather watch the Pies at another ground (outside of Vic Park)? |
