Post subject: How long does it take to gel? | |

Serious question though. If we call out injuries as a major contributing factor to our poor seasons of late, added to the new recruits and returning players, how long do these blokes need to play together before it clicks? We still have a few to come in but largely we have our best 22 to pick from.
Is 5 games enough? 10? A whole season?
At what point can we rule out the "gelling factor" for our poor performances and surely have no more excuses and trigger the reboot? When is it 100% ok to point the finger at Bucks? _________________ The match day thread is for unfiltered BS knee jerk reactions. The time for level headed comment comes after. |

The problem is, there will always be someone injured.
The hawks won multiple flags because their structures held up, regardless of injuries. They would lose a player but because their systems were so rock solid, the replacement for the injury, always knew his role.
We might have a near full list next week and if Grundy goes down, we are back to square one and back to offering more reasons / excuses for losing games.
Good teams find a way to win. That's not us right now.
There is more to it than injuries.
Footy is a winning business. Successful businesses aren't interested in excuses, they are only interested in solutions. As frustrating as injuries are, we need to move on from them or we will just continue to accept mediocrity. |

I have been arguing this same point for a long long time.....for so long, some posters on here have bemoaned the fact: "we would have won X game if X player(s) were playing"..look at the injury list". Injury much like umpiring excuses make up only a small part.
This season we have pretty much our best 22 and we look no better placed then any other season in the last five years.
List depth and team/squad structure win games and premierships.... Look at the dogs last year...look at Hawthorn in its great years.....they lose a player to injury the next guy coming in just fitted in seamlessly to his role.
If your a team built on having your best 22 on the park week in week out....your never going anywhere. _________________ "To know nothing of events before your birth, is to forever remain a child" - Cicero (Roman Lawyer/Senator) 46 BCE. |

Was thinking the very same thing after the game. One thing is clear our game is 100% reliant on max effort. We can't "cheat" rest like good disposal teams do. When we try to we can't score.
I'm hoping we can find some cleaner baller use going forward. We got Wells for this reason hopefully he can come in and have a huge impact. |

Whilst I agree to an extent, surely those teams would have a reasonable run with their core players and a high percentage of the team playing together for an extended period so when a new face comes in, everyone else knows their role and o the new player only has to learn it. Aside from 7 players having to learn the system. Hope that makes sense.
For what it's worth, 10 games without an unreasonable turn over (what ever the league average is)is my feeling to start seeing the game plan work for extended periods. If it's still massively fallin down and Bucks has to revert to man on man, he should be walked. _________________ The match day thread is for unfiltered BS knee jerk reactions. Depends.

some more good ball users include; dunn, degoey, daicos, shaz, aish, and wills.
get them on the park and we may see a difference. _________________ no second chances |

People have been questioning our game plan, skill level and waiting for us to gel for years now.
To be brutally frank I'm at a stage now where I doubt we'll see much progress until a new coach arrives. _________________ He's mad. He's bad. He's MaynHARD! |

I was saying before the season started that our forward line is a work in progress and that's the way it's panning out after 4 games. Injuries or no injuries, Cloke has gone and we are revamping our forward line and it might take all of this year or some of next year to get it right. A new coach may or may not speed things up, or take us backwards for all I know. The coach is just one factor in all this. If it was this simple to state that the side will gel after round 11 (half way mark) and if it doesn't, it's all the coach's fault, so let's get rid of the coach if the side isn't firing on all cylinders after this time. |

It takes precisely 17.25 games for a team to gel...........or 5.8 hours to turn them into a human centipede. _________________ RED "BABY" CAVANAUGH: Didn't hear what the bet was.

Good post Haff
With our injury problems over the last few years we've been forced to play guys who aren't that good, while players that should have been developing like Shazza and Elliott haven't.
I'm hoping once our best team is on the park they can gel over a few games but I suspect it will be more like a few years. We have some serious holes in our list, even with everyone available and there will need to be some major personal changes before we can threaten. |
