Post subject: The curious case of the lost gay Jesus porno | |
|
I found this a fascinating read. Perhaps not for the religious or easily offended.
http://obscurityandbeyond.blogspot.com.au/2010/02/lost-movie-detective-him-1974.html?m=1
Quote: | Are you curious about HIS sexual life? If this ad is a little too coy about giving away exactly whose sexual life it is referring to, let me spell it out for you: J-E-S-U-S - H - C-H-R-I-S-T.
But this isn't just any old scandal-baiting religious art-flick, no siree. Look a little closer, at the strapline under the title: "X-Rated... All Male Cast".
That's right boys and ghouls, Him was a hardcore gay porno... about Jesus.
Oddly enough, despite the explosively controversial potential of the subject matter, surprisingly little is known about the film. It seems to be an example of a truly "lost" movie; to all appearances, it has fallen off the face of the Earth, with nary a dusty bootleg videotape or a scratched-up old film print having shown up to prove it ever existed. Indeed, there are some who maintain it never did, but, by piecing together all known information on the film, as well as dabbling in a little original research of my own, I reckon I've proven the naysayers wrong. Him did exist, and it may still be out there... somewhere. |
The thing I find most bizarre about this whole tale is that nobody else in the 120 year history of cinema seems to have ever thought of doing this. It's not exactly the most inspiring plot premise, but, y'know, Rule 34... _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace

Who knows? Something like this might happen.

Quote: | Dear Ann Landers:
The office of the Attorney General of the State of Illnois respectfully requests your assistance in combating an international chain letter that is distressing hundreds and thousands of Christians and those of other faiths as well.
The chain letter is a plea to protest "in the strongest possible language" the making of a movie in which Jesus Christ could be depicted as a swinging homosexual. Both this office and the Associated Press have chased down every possible clue and cannot find a shred of truth in the story that such a film was ever in production.
Modern Film News, which reported the film plans, has been out of business for more than two years. Moreover, 90 percent of the protest mail that has been overwhelming our staff is addressed to the former attorney general, William J. Scott, who has been out of office longer than four years.
Despite our efforts to get the word to the public that the chain letter is a hoax, we continue to receive approximately 1,000 protests every week and at least a dozen phone inquiries each working day. The inquiries and protests have come from 41 states, Canada, Puerto Rico, New Zealand, Australia, Cambodia, Spain, Brazil, the Dominican Republic, India, the Philippines, Guatemala, Costa Rica and Portugal.
We have concluded that the "Jesus movie" rumor originated in 1977 when a suburban Chicago publication, Modern People News, reported that certain interests in Europe were planning such a film and requested that readers express their opinion of the purported project. The result was the chain-letter protest, which, for some unknown reason, has been revived and is again sweeping the world.
We are appealing to you, Ann Landers, to help us get the word out. The scope of your readership and impact on millions of newspaper readers around the world cannot be overestimated.
The postage and phone calls, not to mention the valuable time of employees, run into a great deal of money that could be used for so many worthwhile purposes. Will you please help us?
— Neil F. Hartigan, Attorney General, State of Illnois |
(Yes, I know it's not quite burning down embassies and the like. But it goes to show that religious people of all stripes can be quick to plead for state censorship at the merest hint of blasphemy. It's also kind of ironic that so much public outrage occurred over a hoax when the real thing inspired apparently no consternation whatsoever. Goes to show that sometimes people need to be told to be outraged.) _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

What was the name of that french satirical magazine? Charlie something?
If someone made a movie about Mohammed like that, no studio would be game to release it, no cinema would be game to show it and every person on the credits would need to go into a witness protection program or live their days in a nuclear fall out shelter.
Does Salman Rushdie still have a fatwa on his head?
The Muslim community would do a tad more than take to twitter or write a few letters to express their feelings. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

I don't want this to turn into another Christians vs Muslims thread, but I think it's worth pointing out that these were more than "a few letters". They were part of a massive organised call for the government to step in and ban a film – a film that never even existed! Given the mood of '80s Moral-Majority era America, had it ever actually been made and screened, it's easy to imagine that things could have escalated to arson, violence and the like. But we are still talking about the outrage of relatively affluent, white-picket-fence America here, not that of the uneducated poor in Pakistan or Egypt, and also the fact that Christianity has basically been declawed in the West, so naturally you'd expect a more 'domesticated' response to stuff like this. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

Charlie Hebdo is the name. Time flies when you realise that the shooting occurred two years ago.
The fatwa against Rushdie has never been lifted.

Well, let's not then. We have plenty of other threads in which to discuss the merits of Islam. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |
