Don't they both (movies & pictures) originate from what they were called when first released - "moving pictures" - then shortened to either 'movies' or 'pictures'. That's my theory anyway. |
It appears to be correct from what I have found upon searching for the terms and all. Though I haven't exactly found years of each term it seems that "pictures" and "picture show" used to be the reference to movies, before the slang of movies took hold.
I suppose it could be a generational thing on how some reference it, I do hear a few older people reference pictures still, most say movies, or going to the cinema. Some between 30-40 I've found refer to it as "going to the pictures"
But not many as it was when I was younger though, mostly movies, or cinema now. _________________ Đavâgé

the girlfriend and i have palace cinema memberships. we go about once a month or every couple of months. on many occasions we happen to be the youngest there. we often go to the como or westgarth cinemas, the latter being the old valhalla. i remember seeing a clockwork orange there many years ago.
the palace cinema chain provides quite a relaxing environment with old fashioned decor, and you can take a glass of wine or beer into the cinema. it also conducys numerous foreign film festivals which is good entertainment.
sometimes when we go we nearly manage to have the cinema to ourselves.
the last film we saw was girl on a train at the kino on colllins st. _________________ Purveyor of sanctimonious twaddle. |

JW, oh those were the days when the Valhalla was PACKED.
Around 1989-1990, saw so many cult movies there.
The mate I used to attend with would load our jackets with cans of beer in winter; nobody cared or policed what you consumed in the cinema.
Of course the Blues Brothers was a friday night staple, complete with all the costumed BB tragics and their gimmicks, dancing in the isles to the musical numbers, flying stuffed toys in the Mall scene, flying toast etc.
Also saw A Clockwork Orange [as the Australian VHS release was banned at the time; ah 80s censorship laws], Rocky Horror picture show [awesome on the big screen too], Society, Whore, Peter Jackson's early work: Bad taste and Meet the Feebles.
And they'd often show hours worth of 1950s Warner Brothers cartoon classics of Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck which the audience knew the entire dialogue verbatim, me included. Ah, good times; where did they go? _________________ M I L L A N E 4 2 forever |

Wasn't the original Valhalla in Richmond?
I can remember going to a few of the Friday Blues Brothers nights and Rocky Horror. Bring your booze have a dance, even get up on the stage and join in if you liked. Great times. _________________ If you are foolish enough to be contented, don't show it, but just grumble with the rest. - Jerome K Jerome |

Forgot about Richmond - never got there, sorry!
Was referring to Westgarth cinema, along with WPT. _________________ M I L L A N E 4 2 forever |

Lived in Westgarth in the late 70's early 80's for a short while with Mrs WPT & another couple but only ever went to the Valhalla in Richmond. Vietnamese cafe's & restaurants (they were only just arriving) & have a full meal for two for $5-$10! _________________ âI even went as far as becoming a Southern Baptist until I realised they didnât keep âem under long enoughâ Kinky Friedman

Went to fillums this afternoon with Mrs WPT & saw Nocturnal Animals.
Wow, still not too sure what to think.
Lots to like, some not to.
Pretty good all-round, clunky at times, some very good acting performances & great cinematography.
Had a $50 voucher & upgraded to 2 gold-class films.
Violence, suspense, revenge and overall I liked it. Need to think more about it though. Some bits were a bit clunky & obvious and other bits were well done. _________________ âI even went as far as becoming a Southern Baptist until I realised they didnât keep âem under long enoughâ Kinky Friedman |
