Post subject: Not bye to the end of season bye | |
|
So they decided to have an end of season bye because a couple of teams rested players in round 23 last year. The players were against it. They would rather two in season byes. The coaches were against it because it was a typical knee jerk decision made by the AFL.
I was also against it for this reason.
But now we've had it I think it's a good thing.
It's made the finals series more even and interesting. Everyone in the finals gets the chance to freshen up and reload on the first weekend in September. An added bonus is we can all relax with friends and family on Father's Day without the distraction of a big final.
A big query being put up, not by the club but by others, is the likes of Geelong getting only one game in four weeks. Did anyone worry about this in the days of the final five. Back then you were in pole position if you finished on top, had the first week off then straight into the gf. One game in four weeks didn't matter then. Why should it now?
Keep the end of season bye I reckon. Thoughts? _________________ woodsmen rule |

Great for the bottom four, not so great for the top four. Country footy still is similar though, usually you have some form of match practice or training on the off week to keep the legs fit. I didn't like the bye because it just dragged the season out and made it boring for a week. _________________ Get back on top. |

It was definitely good for the dogs. _________________ "Still waiting for your call Caroline ... not a quote in sight. Don't ever presume to speak on Collingwood's behalf," |

I thought it was good too.
To make it even better next year I'd have the Brownlow Medal night immediately after the end of the home and away season, during that off week. That way all players, even those in the finals, can participate fully regardless of which state they are located. |

I like the idea as it gives the teams an extra week to get over the demands and injuries of the H&A season and this leads to stronger teams and better quality football for the finals. GWS are complaining because they approached the match as being self entitled, played the man more than the ball and the Doggies wanted it more.
GWS want a level playing field - when it suits them. Pretty rich from a side that has been gifted since day 1. _________________ Now Retired - Every Day Is A Saturday |

I hated it.

I liked it. Put the Brownlow on the Monday and you have something. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

Just imagine watching another month of the dirge we served up this year. _________________ I hold a cup of wisdom, but there is nothing within. |

The bye means the Grand Final won't be played on the last Saturday of September. Are we being (ever so subtley) softened up for the eventual introduction of a night GF on the labour day long weekend? A steady erosion of traditions?

It will be known as the Nth Melbourne rule.
Stats speak for themselves.
Dogs have made GF from 7th a first. Also first time since Final 8 format that both teams that played in week 2 have progressed to the GF.
Definitely a bonus for the bottom half of the 8. _________________ Human behavioural studies suggest people who use a lot of swear words tend to be more honest & trustworthy. |
