On open Mike..... was that for real?

I saw Jacko pre VFL, when he played for South Fremantle and he was good. A lunatic, but good.

He said Barrassi couldn't coach a pig to be dirty, Leigh Mathews & Gerrard Healy were dogs, he hates Mike Sheehans guts...... and countless other insults to anyone he could remember.

I fergen loved it! Laughing

Just watched it all.

Jacko was 100% in control and that was 100% a WWE interview designed for maximum publicity, and it worked.

His autobiography was titled "Dumb like a fox".

Pure theatrics with a decent glug of genuine feeling thrown in for flavour.

A total train wreck of an interview but amongst all of that, he did make some good points about the current state of the game but he didn't convey his opinion very well.

I agree with him that the commercialisation and sanitation of the game has been detrimental in some respects, and that the game places more emphasis on athletes as opposed to just pure footballers.

It would have been nice to hear more about his career rather than going on a verbal tirade for 40 minutes against Sheahan. He's a total nutcase and comes across as a complete tosser!

On the other hand, someone like Warwick Capper for all his madness actually comes across as a decent bloke in comparison.

Some are saying that it was put on for show.

Hard to tell.

All I know is, I want Jacko The Interview Part II. Give him a list of names and ask him what he thinks of them all.

Best Open Mike episode ever.... well maybe aside from the Denis Banks one.

Sheahan told SEN Radio on Monday Jackson’s hatred was too fierce to have been an act.

“He was too angry for that,” he said.

“This wasn’t mock anger. This was genuine. Towards the game largely and certainly towards the AFL and I think to the fourth estate. I don’t think there was anyone in the media that would get a tick from Jacko. The odd thing is, he’s probably generating a living now out of all the publicity that was generated by the media.”

Jackson also took a shot at Sheahan over the fact the journalist never played football at the highest level.

“You sit there and you have the gall to come and question me about me and about my career and the blood and guts and the hours I put in at training,” he said.

“You’re kidding me aren’t you?”

One day at Bassendean Oval, Swans v Souths, he was having an average day. The crowd in the McDonald stand were stirring him up and he went absolutely bonkers! Stood in front of the crowd, giving us the finger, shaping up to blokes on the fence, handstands... the lot. It was brilliant!

The bloke could play.

As a football player, "Jacko" was a full forward of great potential. He started his senior career in the West Australian Football League with South Fremantle in 1979. Mal Brown, who was coaching South Fremantle at the time, employed Jackson as a tough forward to protect Ray Bauskis, a skillful but lightweight full-forward. It worked well, with Jackson kicking 53 goals from 22 games and Bauskis 66 from 17 games. South Fremantle finished 2nd that year, but the night before the second semi-final, Jackson returned to Melbourne (East freo beat Souths in the GF that year but Souths went on to win it in 1980 v Swan Districts), after being told that the other players had voted him out of the team.

Upon returning to Melbourne, Jackson rejoined Richmond, who had lent him to South Fremantle. However, with Michael Roach and Brian Taylor at the club, there was no room for a third full forward. Jackson spent the year in the reserves and kicked 131 goals. Seeing that there would be little opportunity at Richmond, Jackson moved to Melbourne for the 1981 season.

I would love to see Caro have a crack at interviewing him but she would probably burst into tears if he had a go at her Dad. Hids reference to the Tuddy interview was pertinent as Tuddy was not happy.

Just watched the interview and plus one from me.

I must say I was astonished he mentioned Ray Price. I watched that man play 11 seasons for Parramatta and a greater football warrior I have not seen in any code.

I remember standing, almost on my own, right on the fence behind the goals in the pouring rain at the Yarra Falls End for the 2 quarters Jackson was at that end during a Collingwood v Geelong game, just so I could stir him. It was a miserable day but I remember that he kicked most of Geelong's score, whilst Cloke, Tony Shaw, Raines and Mark Williams took their opponents apart. Great character - he always appeared to be slightly unhinged when he was playing but that was probably just his game-day persona.

A few years ago, Jacko would be taking himself for a brisk walk through the Broadbeach parklands on a sunday afternoon while myself and the lads were punting the Sherrin around.
He'd always stop for a quick kick with us, although his hamstrings had lost their flexibility and he got very little distance. Not surprising for his age though, at least he was exercising.
But he was always sociable to us blokes. Good times.
