That's what I was thinking as well with Iran consisting mainly of Shia Muslims rather than Sunni Muslims, albeit maybe the perpetrator was a Sunni Muslim.
Not likely he's connected with ISIS based on his nationality alone, but Man Monis was also an Iranian who converted to Sunni Islam and pledged allegiance to ISIS so maybe this is a similar scenario? _________________ | 1902 | 1903 | 1910 | 1917 | 1919 | 1927 | 1928 | 1929 | 1930 | 1935 | 1936 | 1953 | 1958 | 1990 | 2010 | 2023

Just an 18 year old kid (young adult?) with an obsession with mass shootings. And Germany have already limited violent video games.
He's just done untold damage to others of his heritage, selfish bastard. Oh and killed a bunch of innocent people for no reason. Never say his name. _________________ You cant fix stupid, turns out you cant quarantine it either! |

No evidence of that so far. As TP says, more likely a Bryant/Holmes character who just happened to be of Iranian heritage. Won't stop opportunists putting this in the Islamic terrorism box, though. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

Apparently the perpetrator was obsessed with "mass shootings" and has had psychological issues, so it sounds like a nutter more than anything else.
Sad story nonetheless. _________________ | 1902 | 1903 | 1910 | 1917 | 1919 | 1927 | 1928 | 1929 | 1930 | 1935 | 1936 | 1953 | 1958 | 1990 | 2010 | 2023

They're all "nutters" in a sense, Jezza - it's just a question of what brand of "nutter". I don't think any sensible person would suggest that murdering large numbers of ordinary people going about their daily lives could be something a person would decide to do as the result of anything other than quite disordered thinking. Ultimately, though, it doesn't much matter where one sources an individual perpetrator's "nuttiness", the only thing that matters is to restrict the particular cultural manifestations of "nuttiness" that involve mass-murder. |

How much of a part does mental illness have in these cases? And should it matter? _________________ You cant fix stupid, turns out you cant quarantine it either! |

I don't think the question is relevant, really, TP. In a way, all mass murderers are "mentally ill", in the sense that they do things that the vast majority of people would take to be quite "unthinkable" but the response is the same, whether they are "mad" or "bad", namely to try to identify the factors that make this psychologically possible for some people and to limit the potential for those psychological factors to lead to such consequences. In some cases, that will be about limiting easy access to weapons (it's one thing, presumably, to fantasise about killing all one's classmates - or everybody in a shopping centre - but it's quite another to be able to obtain the means to do so). In other cases, it might be about limiting the spread of what are, in substance, latter-day "millenarian" ideologies, whether they involve Islam or any of the varieties of neo-fascism that appealed to, eg, Brevik. |
