Post subject: Are Insects conscious? | |
|
A fascinating piece by Peter Singer about the consciousness of insects and their capacity to feel pain, and whether we should think about them in ethical terms:
https://www.project-syndicate.org/commentary/are-insects-conscious-by-peter-singer-2016-05
Quote: | Scientists used to describe insects as not having a central brain. Rather, it was said, independent ganglia controlled different segments of the insect’s body. If this were the case, it would be difficult to imagine how insects could be conscious.
But a recent article in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences rejects this model. Macquarie University’s Andrew Barron, a cognitive scientist, and Colin Klein, a philosopher, argue that subjective experience could be more widespread in the animal kingdom – and older, in evolutionary terms – than we realize. |

Hehehe, well done Hal!
Well insects obviously think, even if it's basic. Try and catch a spider for a start! So why wouldnt they feel pain?
(I do try to step on them with the whole foot! And I generally carry daddy long legs into the garden!

I'm not sure if I would like to try to step on them with the whole foot. What's it like? |

Just think of the ants as hundreds of tiny puppies. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |
