England all out 103. Johnson 3/27, Hazlewood 2/20, Lyon 2/27, Marsh 1/8, Starc 1/16. Johnson also ran Stokes out with a direct throw from mid-on - that was pretty funny, because Stokes would have been in by about a yard if he'd either grounded his bat or hadn't been in mid-air when the throw hit the wicket.
Broad was the batting star with a big 25. Cook, Balance, Bell, Root and Butler also achieved double figures.
Steve Smith was, of course, Man of the Match for his 215 and 58 from 48 balls to set up the target. It is 81 years since an Australian made a double-century and a 50 in an Ashes test. The last man to do so was Donald somebody.
Peter Nevill's 7 catches ties the debut-test record for wicketkeepers. He is only the second Austraian to achieve that feat (Brian Taber also did so on his debut in 1966).
So, Australia by 405 runs. Series tied 1-1.
That was the 9th-biggest winning margin by runs in a test and the third biggest in an Ashes test. In fact, the English were a little flattered by the margin because the Australians declared twice - they made 820 for the loss of 10 wickets (ie, 82 runs per wicket), whereas the English made 415 for the loss of 20 wickets (20.8 runs per wicket). Rogers and Smith, of course, made 495 between them for the loss of 3 wickets. |

Ain't it sweet. After the poms doctored the pitches too. Mitch Johnston bowled a few brutes in that second innings. _________________ “I even went as far as becoming a Southern Baptist until I realised they didn’t keep ‘em under long enough” Kinky Friedman |

Karma bus mows down England. Poms caught in their own web.
Last week, I wrote this: "There was a time when 'doctoring' a wicket was only something India and Pakistan did.
Now, there's not even a pretense that it wasn't the case in Cardiff.
In what was supposed to be a turf wicket, England produced one "devoid of grass" (Cricinfo), to dull our attack and suit theirs"
----
They attempted to do the same with the sacred Lord's wicket but forgot one tiny (huge, actually) detail. Cook would have to win the toss. He didn't and Australia won by 405 runs.
The Aussies openers, Warner & Rogers - variously called the old man and the T20 slogger - feasted to the tune of 343 runs, with Rogers having to retire, on 49, in the second dig.
Rogers and Smith smashed an 83 y.o. Lord's record for the second wicket, previously held by Bradman and Woodfull. Smith's 215 and 58 had historians scouring the record books. They had to go back 81 years to find The Don had done similar, then.
As Boycs said, more than once, "England tried to blunt the Aussie attack but just succeeded in rendering their attack to near pop gun status"
As it turned out, the Oz attack didn't need a raging greentop - or even just a good English wicket - to prosper.
Our rookie, Josh Hazlewood took 5/88 for the game and Mitch Johnson reminded the Poms of the last series, with 6/80. Nathan Lyon did his job with 3/80.
Mitch Marsh claimed both Cook and Stokes in the first innings. Vital blows. He then bowled Balance with his first ball, in the second.
Starc went for a few runs but twice, took out an opener (Lyth) cheaply.
The rest is ably summed up by Pies4shaw (above).

Good one Donny.
Ian Botham said after about day 2 or so that Australia's bowlers weren't good enough to get England out twice (or words to that effect).
Noice
Now for some decent sleep. _________________ “I even went as far as becoming a Southern Baptist until I realised they didn’t keep ‘em under long enough” Kinky Friedman |
