Here's my current 'form' ladder, based on percentage. Apart from swapping around Freo and the Eagles, I think it's a good indication of the relative form of teams.
Eagles 161
Freo 152
Hawks 151
Swans 135
Pies 128
Crows 113
Giants 110
Tigers 109
Dogs 101
Bombers 100
Port 96
Cats 90
Kangas 90
Saints 82
Dees 72
Suns 67
Lions 67
Blues 63 |

I'm not overly keen on the methodology, but yeah, that's pretty close to being spot on, I reckon. Sad to say the only glaring issue is having us 5th—we all wish, but we're not quite there yet. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

Looks like Geelong and Richmond are moving up this week. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

Why would Geelong move up - they beat a hopeless rabble? If anything, I'd have them going back a rung or two for not winning by 140+ points. |

Yep.
If it's a true 'form' ladder, Richmond, with 4 on the trot (including smashing the premiership favourites at subi) would be top 2 or 3 ... wouldn't they? _________________ Don't count the days, make the days count. |

Yes, perhaps, if this were a completely different exercise.
But seriously, why 4 weeks? Why not 1? Why not 10? What you probably mean is 'recent' form – but even the word 'recent' is totally arbitrary.
I think if you want to judge Richmond's form over the whole season, you have to look at them as the team that lost to Melbourne and also beat Fremantle, etc. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

nothing wrong with being arbitrary because it gives a frame for the analysis. coaches won't reference the form of a team from round 1 if they are playing them in round 13. form is only temporary. teams should be judged on a four week window. it also helps if you watch how teams are winning and losing rather than simply going by the numbers. _________________ Purveyor of sanctimonious twaddle. |

^ What makes 4 weeks the magic number?
To be honest I'm not sure I buy that coaches ignore results from earlier in the season. Isn't it common practice to re-watch games from the previous year (say, the last time the team played their opponent?).
And it's far from unheard of for teams (particularly good teams) to have a flat patch and then recapture their earlier form. Hawthorn and the Swans seem to have had periods like this the last few years. If I were matching up on them after such a slump I'd want to be watching the tapes from when they were at their best.
Anyway, as you all know, my arbitrary frame of reference is "the entire year". _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

Probably time to re-evaluate Port on what I saw last night - there's a fair chance they won't win too many more games this season. Their forward line is completely dysfunctional and their field-kicking is hopeless. Geelong, on the other hand, are a fair to chance to rise as high as ninth by the end of the year. What an over-hyped rubbish game that was. |

I agree, P4S. I've kind of stopped waiting for them to come good. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

I have had a crack at the form ladder.
I have tried to address the criticism made against Collingwood that we have not beaten anyone outside of the bottom 8 (until today against GWS... Go Pies!).
Beat a team ABOVE you on the ladder = 1.5
Beat a team BELOW you on the ladder = 1.0
Lose a team ABOVE you on the ladder = -1.0
Lose a team BELOW you on the ladder = -1.5
I used this ladder to calculate where each team was on the ladder at the end of each round: http://finalsiren.com/AFLLadder.asp?AFLLadderTypeID=2&SeasonID=2015&Round=1-1
This data is from the end of Round 10 so it does not take into consideration the Pies win today against GWS (if I did Collingwood would jump up to 5th). Will wait until the end of Round 12 when each team has played the same number of games.
Club TOTAL
1. Fremantle 7
2. Sydney 5
3. West Coast 5
4. GWS 4.5
5. Richmond 3.5
6. Collingwood 3
7. Geelong 3
8. Port Adelaide 2.5
9. North Melbourne 2
10. Hawthorn 1
11. Adelaide 0.5
12. Western Bulldogs 0
13. Essendon -1
14. St Kilda -3
15. Brisbane -4.5
16. Melbourne -6
17. Carlton -7
18. Gold Coast -7.5 _________________ Sydney Collingwood Supporters Club

West Coast would have to be on top, closely followed by Sydney and Richmond. But "boy oh boy" as BT would say, Collingwood is right up there at the moment. _________________ You can keep your Locketts. There was only ONE Gordon Coventry! |
