It takes all types to get the world around, what the intellectual snobs forget is if all we had were the intellectuals they'd be doing their thinking cold and hungry in the dark. |
For God's sake, Stui, look at the bigger picture. Nobody's saying that all citizens need to be working in advanced robotics or giving lectures in radical feminist architecture; of course we will need manual labourers in the future. But the world is changing, and that means a lot of manual jobs will become a thing of the past. Anyone who takes an objective look at technological development can see that.
That's not snobbery. It's reality. Our leaders need to get with the times or they—and we—will get left behind. |
No it's snobbery. There is nothing wrong with a job where you get your hands dirty. So much for "we are all the same, don't look down on anyone".
Without plumbers, your in the shit.
Without mechanics, your stationary.
Without chefs/cooks your hungry.
If I was on survivor I'd want to be with a tradesman, even a jack of all trades, no point engineering something if you can't make it work.
Stop being a snob. Hurt feelings my arse. So sick of so called educated folk looking down on those doing the work. You could all benefit from some manners schooling.
I would have thought getting everyone working was more important than making sure an elite few have a bigger pedestal.
Radical feminist architecture. What a load of shit! _________________ You cant fix stupid, turns out you cant quarantine it either! |

Er, yes, that's kind of exactly the point here. The only problem is that you're looking at the wrong 'elite few'.
think positive wrote: | Radical feminist architecture. What a load of shit! |
I'd imagine so.
We've been down this path before, so I'll throw this one over to you: what do you think might be some advantages of having a more technologically advanced society and more specialised, highly qualified jobs here in Australia? _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

Well since we don't actually make anything anymore, of course it's beneficial. But does who does it help? Does it give jobs to the ones who really need it? I don't think enough credit is given to what Australians are actually achieving. Important stuff. Not just who can build the best robot.
Saw something on telly briefly the other night, (didn't want to burn tea so missed some of it) about a new tablet form of chemotherapy treatment. I don't have time to research it now, but Australia has lead the way in a lot of new treatments, not just for cancer.
I'm not so sure a more technologically advanced society is where I want to live. I'd rather do more to conserve what little of the planet man hasn't £$%$ed up already.
Maybe this thread would have got a better reception without the usual elitist look down your nose comments and snide asides that went with it. Funny thing is, I reckon anyone who has to continually remind other of their superiority, is probably the most insecure of them all. _________________ You cant fix stupid, turns out you cant quarantine it either! |

As I say, Scott Pendlebury can be called elite without question. But not people whose technology drives economic productivity. They get benched by Abbott.
Deal with the contradiction and stop being so immature. No one wants to deprive anyone of the chance to attend training except Abbott. No one is stopping us calling a player from the EDFL a good player.
A good EFL player should be nurtured to go on and get drafted. An average EDFL player should be nurtured; who knows where it can take them? Theirs is still a gpod leagie, anyhow. Average players who don't want to improve should be nudged along and cajoled in a positive way. Players who drop the the thirds should at least be allowed to enjoy playing the game as best as they can without the stress of being cut from the team.
This is not controversial. Only overpaying obscene salaries to those pretending to be Scott Pendlebury when they are not, or to Scott Pendlebury himself at the expense of the league, is controversial. But in this case Scott Pendlebury is not overpaid. _________________ In the end the rain comes down, washes clean the streets of a blue sky town.

Your call, Jo and Stui. We're all just pissing in the wind here anyway. But if your lack of interest in discussing the future of the country is at all representative of general attitudes out there, then... well, I'd say it means we're in deep shit, but we pretty evidently are already. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

The future of this country is about a lot more than building better technology, at least I hope it is. _________________ You cant fix stupid, turns out you cant quarantine it either! |

^Just as the views of those on Nick's about the country are about a lot more than a single thread on a single topic. Right? _________________ In the end the rain comes down, washes clean the streets of a blue sky town.

FYI, I believe there's a lot of soft hype and nonsense surrounding tech, but that only hides the incredible hard advances being made in every technological endeavour. Don't confuse vintage clothes and beards with hard technology, and certainly not with a social science definition of technology.
Hype and nonsense, as ever can be both helpful and unhelpful: It is helpful only when it attracts attention to serious underlying trends.
**For instance, the main infographic in the middle of the page in this FT article is both helpful and unhelpful, depending what you know about the subjects it impinges on. To its credit, the article goes on to provide this graph which at least offers a potential route for readers to enter the topic more seriously if they want to investigate the role of froth and bubble in the soft tech business, and then the relationship between the soft end of tech and the hard end.

Really. You're taking Ptiddlies condescension medication now are we?
It's not the topic that's the problem, although the biased BS setup doesn't help.
You and Ptiddly can mass debate each other furiously, the fact that others choose not to inflict that on themselves isn't a negative reflection on them. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

Well, actually, it quite seriously does reflect on them because it's so immature and nonsensical.
There is nothing condescending about some economic sectors being more economically productive than others, and the country needing to push more people into those sectors.
Or: There is nothing condescending about midfielders like Scott Pendlebury being better footballers than others on the list, and Collingwood needing more Scott Pendleburys—especially when they do not demand superstar salaries.
Which part of that bothers you so much? Ought Sam Dwyer somehow feel offended by it?
Please, build a bridge. _________________ In the end the rain comes down, washes clean the streets of a blue sky town.
