I get why oddballs like Lambie, Day and Leyonhjelm would go for that. But how did Cory "king of the fruitcakes" Bernardi manage to convince his whole party to get behind this?
Of course, the secret probably lies in the wording. By making the inquiry about not just Halal, and not just Halal and Kosher, but about all certifications, he's managed to make the inquiry sound (to an uncritical ear) inoffensive. But we all know what this is really about, and we all know what section of the voting public this is playing to.
Honestly, this is on par with the Labor MP asking Tony Abbott to produce his birth certificate, "just so people will stop bothering me about it". Absolute pandering to the lowest common denominator, and moderate Liberals and Nationals who supported this should hang their heads in shame. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

I wonder if Bernadi has a problem with bestiality in general or only halal certified man beast relations?

^ Thanks Skids, but having grown up in a Kosher-abiding family, I'm sufficiently aware of the method. It's not pretty.
For the sake of fairness, here is some footage of animals being slaughtered the 'humane' way:

Not to flog a dead cow, but I've never understood the cognitive dissonance required to accept Western methods of slaughter as good/necessary/humane/appropriate and Halal as evil/cruel/violent/savage. Halal and Kosher (at least, as they are practised outside of Australia) methods are certainly less humane than a bolt to the head, but come on, people, we're talking a matter of degrees here. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

I'm a bit squeamish so can someone let me know who's cow killing method was more humane?
Halal, Kosher or Western?
Give them votes for most humane like the Brownlow if that helps! |

Fair enough. But you did fall into that snare way too easily given the reputation of your own meat industry. But, more generally, raising and killing creatures even in the most humane, non-economic manner at our level of affluence and facility still takes some serious justification. _________________ In the end the rain comes down, washes clean the streets of a blue sky town.

When I was a kid, one time when things were tough Dad did some jobs for a farmer who paid him in sheep.
I had to stand over them and hold them still with my knees and lift the chin up so Dad could cut their throat.
