Chalk that one up as a win. This leaves us with the following score update:
Lives saved by guns: 1.
People killed by guns: 8855.
* 8855 is the 2012 official FBI figure for gun-related homicides. This year's figure will be even higher, no doubt. _________________ Let's eat Grandma. Commas save lives! |

Has anyone explored whether this outcome may have arisen only because the intruder was not carrying a weapon? |

Yes, because 11 year olds and loaded weapons are such a wonderful mix...ffs |

Well in this case it was indeed a wonderful mix.
Had she not had that loaded weapon the story could have been much worse. An 11 year old who is properly taught responsible firearms ownership and use is fine. I had friends in primary school who went hunting with their dads at that age, in the USA that would be common and accepted. |

But it's illegal for him to have a gun, gun laws make us safe. Criminals who happily break laws against break and enter and murder will surely acquiesce to gun laws.
Gun control only impacts on law abiding citizens. |

Wokko, answer this one for me, would you feel safer in Australia bringing up a family or in the USA under the current laws of each country? _________________ Cheers big ears |

Apples and Oranges. If I lived in the USA I wouldn't feel safe with Australian gun laws. If Australia starts to go feral and it's certainly becoming less civilized (or I lived in a shithole like West Sydney) I'd feel safer being able to own a firearm. Not having the freedom to make that decision bothers me far more. I'd be perfectly comfortable living in Switzerland, Finland or the Czech Republic, all peaceful European countries with liberal gun laws. I'd feel safer living in Vermont than in Sunshine.
Also, having the freedom to make my own decisions is more important than some perception of safety. Having my government decide that a woman isn't able to even carry pepper spray to defend herself isn't right (WA excluded, she could carry it there). |

My thoughts exactly.
Would it be such a good news story if she accidentally shot herself, killed a sibling in a fit of rage, took it to school to kill the class bully, had the weapon taken away from her and used against her, or scared the intruder into shooting her?
To use this story as some kind of advertisement for gun legalisation is certifiably crazy. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |
