If I was the NSW premier I'd be shitting myself.
I know many young people who are between 18-22 and voted for labour in the Victorian state election because of their dislike for Tony Abbott - I use young people because they seem to be quite vocal about it. More so than most older people I engage with.
Regardless of who I voted for and why, a few of them actually argued with some older liberal voters I know with the reason "How can you vote for Tony Abbott and the Liberal Party when he's £$%$ed the country".
I'd say that happened in QLD (not just with young people) and it will happen in NSW when the time comes.
The Abbott factor I believe is massive - regardless of what former Liberal Premiers said at the time.
I also ask the question, is 18 too young to vote? _________________ Heeeeeeeeeeeeeey, we want some Bayley! |

Not if they're able to work out how to vote for the correct party. |

One reason given was that they (LNP) hoped to catch still holidaying youth off guard. ie. Making it more difficult for them to register. _________________ Donny.

On that last question, I've wondered that myself. And yet, interestingly, several parties in the UK are calling for the minimum voting age to be reduced to 16. I guess it depends on how you look at it: most 18-year-olds are not as worldly or educated as the average 35-year-old, but do you actually need to be "the full quid" to do your democratic duty? Perhaps it's just enough to have a functioning brain and some degree of independence.
As for the rest, NSW will be very interesting. The Abbott factor will play a role, but this isn't Queensland. Mike Baird is arguably the most moderate Liberal premier, and from what I understand he's done a pretty good job so far. NSW Labor, on the other hand, has been on the nose for years. Even I'd think twice before preferencing that lot above the Coalition in NSW.
I guess we'll have to wait and see. _________________ "Every time we witness an injustice and do not act, we train our character to be passive in its presence." – Julian Assange |

I don't think there's much prospect of the LNP forming government now. Labor already has Peter Wellington's vote in the bank, so they only really need 44 seats. The absolute worst case scenario would be that they only get 43 and have to negotiate with the Katters as well, but they've indicated they're leaning towards the ALP. Newman really pissed a lot of people off. _________________ "Every time we witness an injustice and do not act, we train our character to be passive in its presence." – Julian Assange |

Agreed David, but Newman's gone and the new leader might be more palatable. Katter is a capital C Conservative. He backed Abbott in 2010. The LNP though will have to eat humble pie because apparently they've given a lot of shit to KAP over the journey. |

It wouldn't just be the Katters that the LNP would need to negotiate with. At the moment, if absolutely everything falls into place for them, they can only win 42 seats. One of the four seats up for grabs is between Labor and an independent, Chris Foley. He's a conservative Christian, but like Windsor and Oakeshott, someone who's been through the National Party and rejected them. The Libs would have to woo him and the Katters; Wellington has indicated that he won't vote with them. If Labor wins just one of the four seats up for grabs, it all becomes academic. _________________ "Every time we witness an injustice and do not act, we train our character to be passive in its presence." – Julian Assange |

Yeah, that was a surprise. A few people were gloating over her supposed demise on Twitter on election night; apparently they may have jumped the gun.
Seriously, Pauline Hanson in a hung parliament? Please, God, no. _________________ "Every time we witness an injustice and do not act, we train our character to be passive in its presence." – Julian Assange |

Hanson, if she wins, will only be taking a safe LNP seat anyway, so it's not as if she will make the slightest bit of difference to anything.
Q: What's the difference between Pauline Hanson and a Queensland Liberal?

Well knock me over with a feather, the Katter Party will support the ALP.
I predict another one term Government.

If QLD Labor follow through on their policies, and interesting mix of savings, small government reform and socialist principles then they may well have the blueprint for a Labor party renewal. |
