Although politicians are prone to exaggerated rhetoric and dodgy metaphors, I was a little bemused this morning to hear the American vice-president comment on the eternal fate of ISIS members:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/post-politics/wp/2014/09/03/biden-to-islamic-state-we-will-follow-you-to-the-gates-of-hell/
Joe Biden wrote: | We take care of those who are grieving, and when that’s finished, they should know we will follow them to the gates of hell until they are brought to justice, because hell is where they will reside. |
Perhaps most of those clapping were under the impression that Biden was simply using a symbolic phrase, and not actually stating his belief in a place of eternal damnation. But the weird thing is that, even with modern mainstream Christianity's attempts to distance itself from the concept, quite a few people still actually seem to believe in it.
Personally, I find the idea of a literal hell inconceivable, even beyond any of my doubts about the afterlife or a spirit realm. But I'm a sceptic in many ways, and there are more than a few popularly-held metaphysical beliefs that I reject. For those who think I'm wrong on the existence of a soul or good and evil or the existence of God, do you think I'm wrong on this, too? That is to say, do you think that there is a place of eternal torment that certain people go to when they die? And if so, how do you imagine it? _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

This question doesn't warrant any consideration at all. Religion is just a tool to control the weak minded. The chances of humans accidentally discovering some divine truth whilst making up stories to control and dominate each other is fairly remote. |

Over the years I've told a few people to go to Hell.
I'd like to think I wasn't wasting my breath. |

^ Very brief, yet so precisely to the heart of the matter that further discussions seems unnecessary. One of the truly great short posts. _________________ Let's eat Grandma. Commas save lives! |

I would intuitively agree with Nick, but the fact is that quite a lot of people seem to think this is worthy of consideration, to say the least. See the poll results—almost 50% have said 'yes'. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

And they would have told you the earth was flat 500 years ago. Popularity does not make nonsense less nonsensical. |

So how does someone who believes in hell (or at least says they do) manage to become vice-president of one of the most powerful countries in the world? Are superstitions like these really still so prevalent? _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

Let's cut him a little slack here, David. Consider my own case: I'm not in the slightest religious. I do not doubt that the case for Hell is weaker than the case for the Tooth Fairy. Nevertheless, from time to time where a person is a genuine 24-carat evil bastard with little or nothing to be said in his defence, I have been known to say "may he rot in Hell" and mean it. It is, of course, a figurative expression and shouldn't be taken to imply that I'm daft enough to think Hell is a real place, but at that particular moment, thinking of that particular mean, evil bastard, I'd cheerfully vote to create it.
In short, speaking of Hell does not always imply actual belief in it. Mind you, the average American politician is pretty broadly clueless as a rule and generally scores about 8.5 on the Self-delusion Richter Scale, so you are probably right. _________________ Let's eat Grandma. Commas save lives! |
