The Double is really good, CC. Darkest comedy I've seen for a long timea bit like Brazil in some ways.
Not really a fan of Polanski, but I'll probably keep an eye out for Venus in Fur when it comes out. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

Based on the Dostoevsky book, not Saramago, right? A couple of reviews I've seen haven't been very kind, though much of the criticism has been over its drabness and lack of likeable characters - not usually a problem for me. With comparisons to The Trial and Kafka in general, and now your comparison to Brazil (though it seems less fantastical?), this is a film I had some interest in and will probably end up seeing in some form. _________________ Well done boys! |

Dostoevsky, I believe, Inkling (although I haven't read it so can't say with 100% certainty). I think what would put a lot of people off is how unrelentingly grim it is. In terms of atmosphere and look, it's pretty damn good. Hope you get a chance to see it. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

St Louis Blues.
Recorded it the other week from the TV. ABC of course.
1958 film. When Rhythm & Blues was the real R & B & based on the music of WC Handy
From Wiki (In italics below)
WC Handy: William Christopher Handy (November 16, 1873 March 28, 1958) was an American blues composer and musician.[1] He was widely known as the "Father of the Blues".
Handy remains among the most influential of American songwriters. Though he was one of many musicians who played the distinctively American form of music known as the blues, he is credited with giving it its contemporary form. While Handy was not the first to publish music in the blues form, he took the blues from a regional music style with a limited audience to one of the dominant national forces in American music.
Starring:
Nat King Cole, Eartha Kitt, Ella Fitzgerald, Cab Calloway, Mahalia Jackson & the wonderful Pearl Bailey amongst others.
Clunky film but great music. Loved it. The trailer:

Looking forward to the Melbourne International Film Festival next month. Richard Linklater's Boyhood looks fantastic, as does Alain Resnais's final film Life of Riley. Plus, one for the oldies: a new film by Jean-Luc Godard!
Anyone else thinking of going along this year? _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

Just watched 'Get the Gringo'. Great action film set in a Mexican prison town about a thief (Mel Gibson) who has stolen money and ended up on the Mexican side of the border and is sent to jail by some cops who appropriate his criminal proceeds. A coherent if somewhat farfetched plot that leads to enough action to satisfy Mel's Lethal Weapon fans.
Highly recommend 7.5/10. |
