It was a good effort by the Aussies but we clearly lacked the quality to get the job done but our effort especially in the second half was positive as we were hanging in there but Chile's goal in the final minutes summed up the night as being very frustrating overall. It was no surprise that Chile's pace with Alexis Sanchez leading the way killed us in the end.
Overall, I've been impressed with the fact that under Ange that we have become more composed and structured and we have more self-belief than we did under Holger Oseick. We won't make it to the last 16 but if we can display some good football against Spain and the Netherlands then we should be proud of our effort nevertheless.
Also well done to Tim Cahill for his achievement in scoring in three different World Cups which consist of 2006, 2010 and 2014! Well done to Timmy in what will probably be his last World Cup for the Socceroos.

So, who was the central defender who impersonated a witch's hat for the second Chilean goal? Better not have him on the park against the Netherlands or Robben might score 5 or 6. |

Looking at the replay P4S our two centre backs were out of position and it was Wilkinson and Leckie who stood there (both midfielders) as they watched as Valdivia blast home Chile's second goal for the game. The central defenders were focused on stopping Alexis Sanchez and fair enough since his pace is brilliant. _________________ | 1902 | 1903 | 1910 | 1917 | 1919 | 1927 | 1928 | 1929 | 1930 | 1935 | 1936 | 1953 | 1958 | 1990 | 2010 | 2023

Wow. Two huge results today. Italy beat England 2-1. Costa Rica beat Uruguay 3-1. That is really an upset.
The Netherlands look good things at the moment. Pity help the Socceroos next. _________________ Rain or hail, I wag my tail |

Hoping that Nigeria (Group F), Ghana (Group G) & South Korea (Group F) get off to good starts. I'm hoping at least a couple of non Euro / South American sides push on into the last 16 at least and bust open the hegemony.
So far good starts by Cote d'Ivoire, Mexico & Costa Rica.
Roll on the upsets and that includes Australia (but it wouldn't be an upset, it would be a miracle!)
Love the World Cup !! |

After another great day of football with victories for Switzerland, France and Argentina, the trend of no draws so far in the World Cup has continued. Coming up today we have three matches occurring with the other group F match today occurring between Iran and Nigeria and both group G matches coming up as well with the highly anticipated clash between Germany and Portugal first up today followed by Iran and Nigeria as mentioned earlier which is the group F match and to round out the day we have Ghana up against the USA in which both nations have previously met each other in the last two World Cups respectively in 2006 and 2010 so these sides are very familiar with one another and should make for a enthralling contest. On both occasions Ghana has prevailed, so the USA will want to rectify the results of the last two encounters against Ghana.
Germany v Portugal - Group G
Iran v Nigeria - Group F
Ghana v USA - Group G _________________ | 1902 | 1903 | 1910 | 1917 | 1919 | 1927 | 1928 | 1929 | 1930 | 1935 | 1936 | 1953 | 1958 | 1990 | 2010 | 2023

A special plug for SBS's coverage of classic matches throughout this World Cup and, in particular, for the upcoming coverage of the 1974 and 1994 games between Brazil and the Netherlands.
Like many Australians, I first saw world cup soccer in 1974. I watched all of Australia's games - but mostly I remember the Dutch. Theirs was the most captivating soccer I ever saw. If you are interested in the past greats, I encourage you to watch this. |

Gotta say I am loving the coverage of the World Cup, agree love the classic matches tossed into the coverage. I hope that other channels are watching this coverage and actually takes a few notes.
Really enjoy Martin Tyler's commentator, also like the other aspects of the coverage as well. Like I know a few hate the Social media thing, but I think it's a very useful thing to just show some reactions to the goings on, etc.
On the World Cup itself was a bit surprised that Germany destroyed Portugal like they did, was just scary good. _________________ Ðavâgé
