No, someone from a basketball backround like Pendles will never make it, let alone captain an AFL team..... |
Lazza i know you are smarter than this, but if not, it is very naive (a polite way of say stoopid!) of you to assume that Pendles never kicked a football before giving away basketball Maybe you've nbever been to america and watched incredibly talented sportsman try to kick. They cant! because while pendles was playing kick to kick in the back yard with his basketball mates when he had some spare time to kill, american sportsmen are throwing bullets to each other with their arms. It is a huge difference. _________________ Ohhh, the Premiership's a cakewalk ....... |

Pendles played football as a kid than tried basketball. He was spotted and recruited after he started playing footy again.
That being said have no problem with Hines going and looking.
Remember AFL is played in the US not only as a fairly amateur league way but has been taught in a few schools. |
Neil, i was arguably the best player in that league you are referring to about 10 years ago. To say it is a bush league would be to underscore the strength of the bush leagues in Australia. At best, the teams over here would give a g grade ammo side a bit of a run for their money.
there are tonnes of athletes (who cant kick or handball or bounce the ball). Then there are a bunch of 30 something aussie accountants and ski bums looking for a game who join the league and become their superstars.
The guys they are looking at would not have played in that league (of that you can be sure).
I still remember the day Jon Ironmonger played in the national championships. during the line-ups, a frisky Irish lad on our team was trying to rev us up by saying "look at them, they're scared of us, they dont want to play us". three minutes into the game Iron monger "accidentally" elbowed him in the head and the guy needs 80 stiches to put his face back together. Still to this day the most disgusting thing i've seen on a footy field. Mind you, no free was paid as the umpires didnt even see it!!!!! _________________ Ohhh, the Premiership's a cakewalk ....... |

Nobody is disputing the difficulty of the transition. The league would be full of US expats if it was easy. We're just saying that you only have to unearth the next Mike Pyke to have justified the experiment and these guys cost nothing in the scheme of things. To discount it is as you've suggested based on sweeping generalisations is very naive |

Exactly. Melbourne took a risk with Wight and Stynes for success.

I want Collingwood to be at the forefront of taking calculated risks for greater benefit of the club. If there is no risk, there is no reward.
I reckon if Hine finds a special, go for it... |
