Post subject: Abbott's Cringeworthy ABC Outburst | |
|
What a trivial, whingeing, incompetent, stuck-in-the-Cold-War dick.
Even best friend of Big Capital and future knowledge infrastructure wrecker, Turnbull, was embarrassed to the point of having to distance himself from the fool:
Turnbull via The Aged wrote: | Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull has strongly defended the ABC's editorial independence in the face of Prime Minister Tony Abbott's attack on the national broadcaster, which he says ''instinctively takes everyone's side but Australia's''.
Mr Turnbull defended the Prime Minister's right to critique the ABC but, in comments that could be interpreted as resistance to Mr Abbott, he said the ABC was rightly accountable to its board of directors, not politicians.
''What's the alternative … the editor-in-chief [of the ABC] becomes the prime minister?'' he said. ''Politicians, whether prime ministers or communications ministers, will often be unhappy with the ABC … but you can't tell them what to write.'' |

This sort of extremism is why Wall Street gets to have its way over yonder; the whacko US right, and their kindred spirits such as Abbott here in Australia, are so bad that even social wealth destroying alternatives such as Turnbull and his investor mates start seeming preferable. _________________ In the end the rain comes down, washes clean the streets of a blue sky town.

The LNP didn't say anything when Gillard and the ALP were in the firing line. Murdoch's first reward is Sky goes to Asia to replace the ABC. Then we will have Murdoch as CEO of the ABC. The LNP only want a media that backs them.
For Abbott to attack he ABC and calling them un Australian for airing a story and stating it wasn't theirs about the NAVY is piss weak. Scott Morrision refused to answer any questions put to him regarding the story and then cancelled the so called monthly media (spin) reports. |

It's totally ridiculous, and another sign that Abbott is suffering from an acute case of NFI. In what world did he think this would be an intelligent thing to say? Perhaps it'll play well with the rah-rah patriots, but everyone else is going to be pretty flabbergasted. Even members of his own party (the few who actually think free speech is more than just a good conservative buzzphrase) seem to be freaking out. So, how on earth did this guy get elected? _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

Sorry, how did the ABC win the international broadcast tender again ?
Did they have the best bid and if they did why did the Labour Gov have to pay compensation ??? _________________ "Even when Im old and gray, I wont be able to play but Ill still love the game"

Does Abbott realize that a privatized ABC would be still be just as left wing as before, only government would have not even an iota of control? It's fine to say that the Free Market will fix it, but the ABC is the sole provider to a niche market and I don't see how changing it's funding model from public to private would change it's core demographic. |

I actually doubt that. A privatised ABC wouldn't last in the open market as is. Have you seen the radio/TV ratings? I'd say goodbye to Radio National and Lateline and hello to another 3AW and A Current Affair. I have to wonder at the priorities of people who think that would be a good thing. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

This latest attack is, as all the previous one were, no more than an attempt to silence one potential source of intelligent critique of political drivel.
I don't see any of the allegedly discernible "left wing" bias in the ABC - my main concern about it remains that it often gives too much airplay to poorly-argued, illogical and bigoted conservative "positions" in circumstances where there is no viable argument to support them. |

People really need to be taking a hammer to Abbott over this. Bernard Keane gives it a go:
http://www.crikey.com.au/2014/01/30/abbott-lays-out-his-lines-of-attack-on-the-abc/
Quote: | Bear in mind that Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull took the extraordinary and entirely improper step last year of ringing the managing director of the ABC to complain that the ABC had run the Snowden Indonesia story in conjunction with The Guardian - a mistake Turnbull again appears to have made in relation to the ABC’s asylum seeker burns story. After the Indonesian story, Abbott accused the ABC of, in effect, breaching its charter by “advertising” for The Guardian. When Katharine Murphy of The Guardian asked him why the ABC’s journalistic collaboration with News Corp and Fairfax wouldn’t also be advertising, a stumped Abbott refused to answer.
The claim that the ABC is breaching its charter — and using the loaded term “advertising” — is a serious one. And Abbott’s comments about the ABC needing to barrack for Australia as well as have a rigorous commitment to truth echo Thatcherite criticisms of the BBC during the Falklands War, when that broadcaster was attacked for failing to cheer on British forces and instead was behaving “neutrally”. Remember also that the during the Iraq War debacle, Coalition senators attacked the ABC for refusing to use the possessive pronoun “ours” about Australian troops engaged in invading Iraq — again suggesting a lack of patriotism. There is nothing accidental about Abbott’s wording here. And it echoes his previous criticism of the ABC, which he accused last year of working with a “left-wing British newspaper”.
In addition to claiming the ABC was unAustralian and breaching its charter, Abbott also suggested the ABC was wasting money in setting up a fact-checking unit — a unit that caught the Coalition (and Labor) out in lies during the election campaign.
Breaching its charter, not being Australian enough, wasting money: this is the basis for the Coalition’s attack on the ABC, which will most likely begin with withdrawing the contract for the international television service the Howard government insisted the ABC run back in 2001. |

I assume the roll eyes is because that story has received almost zero attention from the left? _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

The Mad Monk just wants his shock jock mates, Hadley, jones, bolthead, and old fart Murdochs rags, reporting the so called truth, from his side of the political fence, and cannot stand any scrutiny or accountability of his regime, or of himself. Hes done a massive dummy spit, he makes out hes a tough pug, but he cant hack one iota of fair and balanced reporting, not just by the abc, by anyone who does not fit his extreme agenda. He wants a govt not accountable to the people, for the people to be withheld the facts and news, that's his real agenda, and that, is fascism, pure and simple fascism, or communism, no free media, just lap dogs like bolthead to do your bidding, and only report uncritical news. He love the way Gillard got crucified daily by old fart Murdochs rags, called a witch and bitch, he loved it, now he cant hack it, and his tantrum was woeful. I had no time for Howard, but howard was a tough little bugger, no way would he have gone around whinning and whingeing like a brat, due to the abc, no way known, poor little tones, cant hack scrutiny of govt.
