Source: This is copied directly from the (Qld) Sunday Mail 17/8/03.
In the Q & A column entitled "Ask Vossy", a reader asks:
" Does the 'holding the man' rule still apply? Some umpires penalise players but others do not"
This is Michael Voss's answer:
"I think umpires do a reasonable job - they can't pick up everything.
If anyone cops a raw deal on getting held without the ball, it's probably (Alistair) Lynchy up at full forward.
His sheer body strength and the fact he doesn't mind initiating body contact means umpires seem to think he is holding just as much as his opponent"
The column is accompanied by a picture of Lynch with Wakelin in a headlock from last week's game.
The caption ???
"ONE THAT DIDN'T GET AWAY: Brisbane full forward Alastair Lynch was given a free after this tangle with Collingwood's Shane Wakelin in the MCG goalsquare last Saturday"
Yep, the weather might be good up here, but we have to read this shit every day.

It appears to be a disappointing direction the game has taken. Week in and week out we watch Taz being held for no free's. But if you step back and watch, it's allowed to happen to all forwards in the comp.
I remember watching the Carlton game and seeing Tex riding into Fevola's back, hanging on and scragging. Instinctively I thought "Oh shit - he's given away the free." But then I remembered that kind of play is now allowed.
So having said that, I'm sure Lynch is getting held weekly, but no more or no less than any other forward in the league. Stop the sooking Voss. |
