Thurrold is an absolute champion of the game and a top bloke to boot, I just wish he would be in brisbane around august 16th, it would make my mothers 60th the best ever...
Without ruffling a feather.....lmao

Good question but too hard to pinpoint someone similar in today's game as no players drop kick or stab pass.
And for those too young to know. A stab pass was a drop kick but usually of a shorter distance and was kept low for chest marks. Other great exponents of this kick were Jack Clarke (Ess) and Billy Goggin (Gee).
As a youngster, Merrett used to practice this kick by aiming for a car tyre in the low fork of a tree. He wouldn't stop till he got 8 out of 10 on target. _________________ Donny.
It's a game. Enjoy it. |

Yep Magfan , Barry Price used to drill them onto McKennas chest with precision the last two blokes i can recall to use the stab pass were Rioli and Cable with great accuracy. Was great to enjoy a wonderful moment of time with Collingwood champion. |

Apparently, Tony Francis was much like Thurrold inthe way he went about his footy and his hardness at the ball....

Yeah, I remember Thorold Merrett well. He used to own a sports store where our school used to make us order our school footy jumper, socks, shorts, etc. What a buzz for a young Pie supporter like me to be fitted out personally by a living legend. Then one year when our school played an Adelaide school in the annual game they got Thorold Merrett to umpire it. Boy, was I looking forward to this. About half way through the second quarter, I came out with "Oh, shit". Merrett blows the whistle. Free kick against me for swearing!!! When I queried him politely, he said that good catholic schoolboys shouldn't use such language on or off the footy field. When I told him not so politely to show me which bloody rule book he was using, I got 15 yards. Soon after, I got dragged! Our so-called coach told me that it didn't matter whether we won or not, it was how we represented our school that mattered. He got a burst from me as well.
I never played another game for the school
Yeah, I remember Thorold Merrett well.
Bloody good footballer he was, too.

Great anecdote Donny, but it's not quite the way I remember it, or not how I read the story anyway. Not to be pedantic, but the alternative's also pretty good:
"Can he kick a bag of spuds over the Murray River?"
"No, but he can stab pass a tennis ball through a knot hole from 40 yards."
Actually, since this is the polite version, I suspect the chook's arse variant is the real one!
