I'm not sure that's necessarily evidence of sexism, admittedly. I get the impression Abbott was all for equal opportunity on the subject of which gender to throw punches near. |
Thanks David, but I was fully aware of the totally unfounded attempted smear Tannin was referring too. |

Good for you! |

You mustn't have been around many gay men or, well, anybody much interesting if you can't handle a bit of vulgar discussion about genitalia.
The irony is that Tony Abbott's comments in the past spoken by someone in a role of political office arguably were quite sexist. Slipper's text messages keeping in mind that I think it's totally despicable that a man's private text messages should be used against him in parliament weren't even vaguely sexist. I mean, calling Mirabella a 'botch' (?) wasn't very nice, but she's been called much worse on here. |
Botch? I think there needs to be a "sic" in there somewhere.
Gillard doesn't accept being called "Bob Brown's Bitch" but is okay with her speaker calling Sophie Mirabella a "Bitch".
Slippers texts were completely insulting.
Just close your eyes for a minute and imagine that it was Tony Abbott who sent those texts. Would you be as kind and understanding???? No way.... you would all be calling for his head. Not only would you demand he step down from Parliament, you'd all be signing petitions saying nobody should buy the products / services of the company he goes to work for should he go back into private enterprise. |
Bruno, I take it you haven't read any of my posts of late (it's ok, I know they can be a little tedious!). I've always vigorously argued against public figures' private lives and private communications being used against them. I also voiced my displeasure with the tactics employed by Jones's sponsors and opponents in the wake of the recent scandal.
I don't think it's ever, ever okay to hang someone over a private message, unless it happens to be construed as threatening or harassing to the recipient (confusingly, this is what Slipper is being accused of, but not because of his allegedly 'sexist' texts). Unless you and Tony Abbott are happy for us to sort through every single private letter, email, text message, photograph and conversation you've ever exchanged before forwarding the contents on to your boss and demanding your resignation, it's massively hypocritical of you to assert that Slipper should have been sacked over this.
We don't live in an Orwellian state yet. I've generally been under the impression that most people think that's a good thing. I'm not so sure about Tony any more. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace

Slipper still has a vote. Now the Independants that side with the LNP today come back to the ALP. Shit that means Julia has more votes. |

Yes. I think you have been making some good points of late. (This is probably why I haven't responded much). It's interesting because private / public isn't what it used to be. I guess ultimately it just comes down to not being caught!
Excluding Christopher Pine (butter wouldn't melt in his mouth) I don't doubt EVERY politician has said some things over the years that they would want to become public. |

This doesn't matter anymore. This Parliament will likely go full term regardless (I just don't think Labor has an option for replacing her). Well done to Gillard for that. She is if nothing else a fighter. |

Got nothing to do with her being a fighter.
She's a party hack who has granted her union & communist buddies 3 years to wreck the joint.
Watch her and about 20 others suddenly resign from public life when they get thrown out.
The ALP simply don't care anymore. They'll do all they can to remain in power, collect their pensions and bugger off into the sunset.
And some people idolize these people. Embarrassing for all concerned really. |

She doesn't have too many friends from that side of politics in her camp any more, CP. Have a read of Peter Hartcher's article on her before trotting out the "Gillard's a socialist" line again:
http://www.smh.com.au/opinion/politics/her-hair-may-be-red-but-shes-no-bleeding-heart-20100709-103xm.html
As for "wrecking the joint"... eh, no, life's too short.

Nail hit head.
I'm still wondering which part of Slippers private text about Mirabella is wrong?
I thought that this was a universal & accurate reflection of Mirabella. _________________ “I even went as far as becoming a Southern Baptist until I realised they didn’t keep ‘em under long enough” Kinky Friedman |

As I have said before I vote Green and I am hostile to Julia's position on asylum seekers and gay marriage (amongst other things) BUT, I thought her speech in parliament was magnificient. It made it clear just who was the hypocrite on sexism and misogyny and it wasn't Julia and her colleagues.

Your joking aren't you? The Mad Monk? The man whose greatest political hero is BA Santamaria? Abbott sucked misogyny and homophobia from the mother's milk of the National Civic Council operatives that trained him. Abbott isn't a real Liberal. He's a NCC trained politician who entered the Young Liberals with a group of other NCC politicians via the Young Liberals in the late 1970's. Abbott is the most successful of them by a mile. His thinking and influences are pure NCC who were and still are a deeply mysogynist and reactionary influence in Australian politics. _________________ "Only the weak believe that what they do in battle is who they are as men" - Thomas Marshall - "Ironclad". |
