McGuire said using the English soccer analogy where clubs routinely wear ‘away’ strips to avoid a clash of colours was not relevant to the AFL.
“I know the international thing is good with Manchester United, but they’ve got a world-wide audience of a couple of billion people. We’re talking about a national competition and we don’t see much significance in having extra jumpers for marketing reasons – in fact we think it’s counterproductive.”
And he offered a historical explanation to Port Adelaide – the club that challenged Collingwood to change its guernsey – as to why the Magpies will stand firm.
“Let’s go back to the very beginning when Brittania became the Collingwood Football Club in 1892 and they wore red, white and blue. They said - Footscray have got that in the VFA, so we’ll go radically different and we’ll wear black and white stripes,” McGuire said.
“At that stage, Port Adelaide had already changed to blue and white, to pink and white, then to magenta and white and then in 1903 became black and white.”
“Collingwood had already won a VFA and VFL premiership by that stage wearing the black and white colours.”
“No club should be able to come into the competition with the same colours of the original teams that have been there from the word go."

What I don't understand is why is it such a problem now after Port have been in the game for so long?
Has the Adelaide water affected their eyesight so much they can't see different coloured jumpers?
And why was this not an issue when they thought they were going to whip our asses into submission in the finals last year?

and if Port says that it's the AFL these days and the VFL should be discounted, C'wood were also the first to win an AFL flag wearing the black and white |

it's just a stupid ploy to try to get bums in seats - port is trying to fire up what should be a sell out no probs, cause they're struggling for members and interest.
